The Federation of Guilds of Spain (FGEE) awards the LIBER Awards to personalities and institutions linked to the world of books
Around 300 companies from 10 countries, more than 40 activities, and 300 international guests and speakers make the fair the largest book event in Spanish. Guadalajara-Jalisco participates as a guest city of honor to show its link with the world of books and its designation as “World Book Capital” in 2022.
The International Book Fair, LIBER 2021 returns to Madrid from October 13 to 15 to continue being the great showcase of the spanish book sector. Organized by IFEMA MADRID and promoted by the Federation of Publishers’ Guilds of Spain (FGEE), LIBER, which this year celebrates its 39th edition,will show the vitality of a sector,that of the Spanish book, which in this exceptional time has seen the number of readers grow to an all-time high in Spain, especially during the confinement, as well as it has increased its turnover.
With a participation of 300 companies from 10 countries –Germany; Cyprus; Cuba; United Arab Emirates; Spain; United States; Italy, Russian Federation; Mexico, and Republic of Korea-, LIBER will highlight how the sector is facing the challenges presented by new technologies,changes in consumer habits and the situation of small and medium edition, independent publishing or technical and specialized
In this line, LIBER will once again be a clear exponent of the Spanish book sector’s commitment to bibliodiversity that makes it possible to offer books and other editorial content, essential for social and cultural development, as well as an important leisure activity. In addition, it is one of the most relevant appointments of Spanish publishing companies to expand their presence in foreign markets.
For three days, Hall 14 of the IFEMA MADRIDFairgrounds will bring together publishers, authors, literary agents, booksellers and other professionals linked to the sector. LIBER thus becomes a meeting point of the sector and a fundamental center of export, sales and knowledge for the spanish-language book industry at a time very necessary to recover the commercial momentum in foreign markets.
Buyers and Prescribers Program
To encourage and encourage commercial relations with the participating companies and promote knowledge of the funds presented at the fair, the FGEE has launched different programs aimed at professionals from other countries of special relevance. On the one hand, the Buyers Program will bring, with the collaboration of the Economic and Commercial Offices of Spain and the ICEX Spain Exports and Investments, 300 booksellers, distributors and bilbliotecarios, buyers of Spanish books from more than 36 countries.
On the other hand, through the Program of Prescribers of Priority Interest,carried out in collaboration with Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) and its program of Internationalization of Spanish Culture (PICE), several dozen book professionals have been invited -librarians, publishing agents, university professors, publishers and heads of public bodies- who have the capacity to prescribe, decision and/or purchase of Spanish books.
In addition, of these two programs, LIBER will once again host the Mission of Librarians of the United States, in collaboration with ICEX and the Economic and Commercial Office of Spain in Miami.
Throughout these three days of the fair, all these guests will be able to know in a single space the rich Spanish publishing offer that will allow to initiate commercial contacts (purchase of rights), buy (librarians and heads of public bodies) and / or prescribe Spanish books (university professors and journalists).
Guadalajara-Jalisco, guest of honor city
Guadalajara,capital of the Mexican state of Jalisco, will be one of the great protagonists in this edition of LIBER as a guest city of honor. On the occasion of its presence at the Fair, it has prepared a program of cultural activities and conferences of great interest that will bring closer the historical and cultural aspects of the region.
With a great link with the world of books, Guadalajara has hosted for 35 years the Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL), considered the most important editorial meeting held in Latin America. In addition, the city has been chosen by UNESCO “World Book Capital” in the year 2022. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) awarded the title to the capital of Jalisco for having “a comprehensive policy plan around the book as a concept to unleash social change, combat violence and build a culture of peace for its citizens.” Among the cities that have had the honor of having this title that was established in 2001 are Madrid, Alexandria, New Delhi, Antwerp, Montreal and Turin, among others.
The positive balance of the last edition,held entirely in online format with LIBERDIGITAL,reaffirms the dynamic role of the fair to move sales of the Spanish publishing sector, especially in the foreign sector.
With this, this 2021 call,which will bring together all the agents of the sector in person at IFEMA MADRID, has also incorporated the advantages that the digital format makes available to professionals anywhere in the world, and at all times.
At the moment, more than 600 professionals in the sector are already part of the LIBER LIVEConnect community,a platform that will remain active until November 30 and that plans to host a significant number of meetings among its members.
Forum for debate and reflection of the sector
In addition to a space for commercial exchange, LIBER is also a meeting point for training, debate and reflection. The FGEE has organized an extensive program of professional and cultural activities that will bring together personalities from the publishing sector and offer the opportunity to analyze the future of the book sector.
About 40 days, which will also be recorded and published for later viewing, which will address issues such as intellectual property, the promotion of reading, the environment and sustainability, logistics and distribution. To these will be added the conferences offered by Guadalajara-Jalisco,as a guest city of honor at the fair, and content related to services for the book industry,among others.
In this way, professionals will be able to attend sessions such as Changes in Dilve and the ISBN; The book industry in defense of the environment; A multinational vision on libraries, administration and the book sector. New perspectives, and Opportunities for the internationalization of the publishing sector within the framework of the participation of Spain as Guest country of Honor Frankfurt 2022.
LIBER Awards 2021
On the other hand, the Federation of Publishers’ Guilds of Spain has awarded its LIBER Awards 2021 to personalities and institutions linked to the world of books. The Board of Directors of the FGEE has awarded its prize for the promotion of reading in the Media to Carles Francino,director of the program ‘La ventana’ of Cadena SER. Also the LIBER Award for the best audiovisual adaptation,has gone to the series ‘Patria’,produced by Alea Media for HBO Europe.
In addition, the Prize for the Promotion of Reading in Libraries Open to the Public will be awarded to the Library of Navarra. For its part, Librería Balmes de Barcelona has been recognized with the “Boixareu Ginesta” Award for Bookseller of the Year. The 2021 LIBER Award for the most outstanding Spanish-American author has gone to the writer and poet Bernardo Atxaga. And finally, Javier Gogeascoechea Arrien,president of the publishing house Desclée De Brouwer, will receive the Tribute of this edition of the Fair. The awards ceremony will take place on October 12 at the South Auditorium of IFEMA MADRID.
LIBER 2021,organized by IFEMA and the FGEE, will be held from October 13 to 15. It is a fair sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and Sport, the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism, the ICEX Spain Export and Investment, the Community of Madrid, the City Council of Madrid, the Spanish Center for Reprographic Rights (CEDRO). It also has the collaboration of Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) and the Association of Publishers of Madrid.
