Over 70,000 visitors from 169 countries – spirit of optimism at the world’s leading trade fair for food and beverages – High satisfaction on the exhibitor and visitor side
International, inspiring and above all personal – that was the 36th Edition of Anuga, which took place in Cologne from 10/9 to 10/13/2021. With more than 70,000 visitors from 169 countries and more than 4,600 exhibitors from 98 nations, the world’s leading trade fair for food and beverages has once again proven that trade fairs of this size are possible again. We are very pleased with this result. This underlines the global importance of Anuga and the trust placed in us as a trade fair company. It also shows that Messeplatz Deutschland continues to be a leader and attractive in global competition, explains Gerald Böse, Chairman of the Management Board of Koelnmesse GmbH. The hybrid approach also worked very well and was very popular. With Anuga @home, we were able to offer a good opportunity to inform themselves about specialist topics and engage in intensive networking, especially for those who could not travel to the fair,” Böse continues.
Anuga is also setting standards in terms of internationality in post-corona times: 92 percent of exhibitors came from abroad. The internationality on the visitor side is at a consistently high level at 76 percent (2019: 75 percent). People from 169 nations – this is a strong signal and at the same time shows how much the international food industry needs trade fairs to do business again. This was also noticed by our exhibitors, who told us about excellent customer conversations and the high quality of trade visitors. Conversations with buyers also confirmed how much they appreciate the time for intensive personal conversations with their customers. The Anuga 2021 made the international world of nutrition simply tangible again. And this euphoria and spirit of optimism was felt everywhere at the fair, emphasizes Oliver Frese, Chief Operating Officer of Koelnmesse GmbH.
Top buyers on board
Above all, the good quality and preparation of buyers as well as the serious interest in generating business again convinced the exhibitors. Numerous buyers with decision-making expertise from the trade and food service, including relevant top buyers of important retail chains, came to Cologne for the fair. An initial evaluation of the visitor survey shows that more than 70 percent of respondents use Anuga to maintain and build new business relationships.
Hybrid into the future
As a hybrid event, Anuga also offered a digital platform for exhibitors, visitors and media representatives this year with Anuga @home. In addition to intensive networking, the digitally streamed event and congress program met with great interest with a variety of lectures, discussions and presentations by renowned experts and companies in the food industry. A total of 353 contributions with more than 6,380 broadcasting minutes could be seen on three days of the fair. In particular, the live streamed Newtrition X conferences and the New Food Conference were very popular. The contributions and networking of Anuga @home will also be available on demand after the fair.
Continue to pursue transformation decisively
A spirit of optimism was also evident in the topics at this year’s fair and the digital Anuga @home. Under the motto “Transform”, exhibitors from all over the world showed that the international food industry is taking further steps towards a more sustainable and efficient global food system. In particular, the significant increase in plant-based or purely plant-based products, alternative protein products and novelties with a health-oriented added value confirms these developments. But manufacturers also rely on sustainable production, animal welfare and climate protection in the classic area of dairy and dairy, fish and meat products.
Friedhelm Dornseifer, President of the Federal Association of the German Food Trade (BVLH), also draws a positive balance: “With Anuga 2021, we have successfully brought the world of nutrition fairs out of the corona lockdown. My very special thanks go to Koelnmesse, which made this possible with a lot of heart and commitment from all employees. Anuga 2021 impressively proved that we must continue to pursue the path of transforming our food system decisively. Numerous novelties of sustainably produced and processed products presented here at Anuga testify to the innovative power of the industry and make me very confident that the food industry can make an effective contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and thus to combating climate change.”
Christoph Minhoff, Managing Director of the Federal Association of the German Food Industry (BVE), was also pleased about the successful course of Anuga: “The implementation of Anuga 2021 was an important step back to normality. Koelnmesse has proven that it can safely hold the world’s largest trade fair for nutrition even under corona conditions. Exhibitors and trade visitors were finally able to meet again in person, present goods and conclude contracts. In this respect, this first leading trade fair, which has been taking place since the outbreak of Covid-21, is an important encourager and pacesetter for the global trade in food. In line with the Anuga motto “Taste the future”, the food industry has impressively demonstrated that innovation, sustainability and enjoyment will continue to belong together in the future.”
Ingrid Hartges, Managing Director of the DEHOGA Federal Association, adds: “Anuga 2021 conveyed a strong and important spirit of optimism for both the trade fair industry and the hospitality industry. In this special year, Anuga is the world’s largest trade fair.
In our DEHOGA Lounge in Hall 7, we welcomed visitors from all parts of the industry. Food professionals from individual gastronomy, community gastronomy, catering and system gastronomy informed themselves about new products and benefited from direct exchange with their industry colleagues. Confidence was conveyed in the many conversations, and the great joy of the personal encounters, which are of enormous importance, especially in our industry, was noticeable everywhere.
Another special highlight in Cologne was the 30th Forum System Gastronomy of the DEHOGA Initiative Circle with its varied power program. In addition to Wolfgang Bosbach, one of the best-known and most recognized politicians in Germany, real industry experts were on stage with the company bosses Stephan von Bülow (Block Group), Jörg Gilcher (Five Guys) and Jürgen Vogl (Aramark) as well as market researcher Jochen Pinsker and convinced with stimulating lectures in challenging times.”
The Anuga in numbers:
4,643 companies from 98 countries participated in Anuga 2021 on a gross exhibition area of 244,400 m2. Among them were 400 exhibitors from Germany and 4,243 exhibitors from abroad. The foreign share was 92 percent. More than 70,000 trade visitors from 169 countries came to Anuga 2021, the foreign share was 76 percent.
