Commercial vehicle fair with strong visitor numbers despite pandemic
The NUFAM commercial vehicle fair closes its halls with strong numbers of exhibitors and visitors, which can build on pre-pandemic times of the last event in 2019. Around 22,000 visitors informed themselves over four days from over 350 manufacturers and service providers from 13 countries, which represented the entire spectrum of the commercial vehicle industry. The participants of the first major industry meeting after the start of the pandemic awarded top marks for the range and quality of the offer as well as the organization and the safety and hygiene concept. A higher proportion of trade visitors, a greater reach and personal exchange make NUFAM 2021 an all-round successful trade fair.
Britta Wirtz, Managing Director of Messe Karlsruhe: “Mess Karlsruhe has managed to firmly anchor NUFAM in Europe. With the innovative technologies shown in alternative drives and sustainably-efficient solutions for the freight transport of tomorrow, NUFAM fits perfectly into the research landscape of the Karlsruhe technology region. For example, Karlsruhe KIT presented its current research in the field of re-fuels and many other research institutions along the Rhine rail also showed brand new results of their mobility research.”

NUFAM’s exhibitor present innovative commercial vehicle technology from the areas of alternative drives, digitization and sustainability. Various research projects show what changes the commercial vehicle industry will face in the coming years. The spectrum ranges from solar cells on truck roofs to synthetic fuels to the use of artificial intelligence in transport.
Jochen Bortfeld, project manager of NUFAM, is pleased about the successful conclusion of the fair: “NUFAM 2021 was a complete success. We were able to build on the always good number of visitors to the fair – despite the pandemic! The exhibitor and visitors made the most of the fair to finally exchange ideas in person again and do business directly on the vehicle. This is what NUFAM stands for and we were able to make this possible including the highest security standards and a good and above all flexible organization. I am very happy about how positively the fair was received by everyone involved.”
NUFAM with increased reach and willingness to invest
The innovation and investment dynamics in the commercial vehicle industry are reflected at the fair: The proportion of trade visitors and the willingness to invest have increased compared to 2019. Investments, especially in the mid-six-digit range, have increased. In addition, over 79 percent of visitors plan to buy or order something after the fair. Personal exchange is particularly important to visitors and exhibitories. Thomas Rosenberger, spokesman for Kögel Trailer GmbH, also confirms this: “It was great that there is finally a live event again. We were very enthusiastic about the encouragement of trade visitors and decision-makers and the fact that really many people came – from top-class fleet operators to drivers and fans. We had great conversations and sold many vehicles. We were very pleased to be here again, to present ourselves and to talk about our products.” Patrik Neuwinger, Head of Sales and Rental at Terberg Spezialfahrzeuge, rated the trade fair appearance similarly positively: “We are highly satisfied with the fair itself, with the visitors, with the visitor frequency and also with the quality of the conversations. We have received a great deal of encouragement and intend to compete here in the future with a slightly changed offer from our side.”
The longing for a live event was great and many visitors accepted long journeys to be there. The journey from over 300 km has increased by 5 percent compared to 2019. Ralf Merkelbach, Head of Key Account Management Großflotten Europa at BPW Bergische Achsen Kommanditgesellschaft, also confirms this: “We as exhibitors live from getting in touch with our customers here and therefore trade fairs are extremely important to us. NUFAM itself has developed great over the years. Trade visitors from neighboring countries such as Austria and also from all over Germany have been at the stand. It was a great feeling for us to get together again with people here at the first major commercial vehicle fair and of course also to be able to show them our innovations that we have initiated in the meantime during the pandemic.”
NUFAM as a platform for premieres
Never before have so many premieres been shown as at this year’s NUFAM. NUFAM’s exhibitor deliberately chose the first major commercial vehicle fair as a platform for their new presentations. Especially in the areas of alternative drives, digitization and sustainability, they presented vehicle and product innovations. Manuel Dreher, Managing Director of the DAF sales partner EBB Truck Center, showed the premiere of the new more efficient and even safer DAF vehicle generation exclusively at NUFAM: “We are very satisfied, as are our customers. We only received positive feedback. Everyone is happy to be able to go to a trade fair again. With the new generation of DAF, which can be seen for the first time for the general public, we have a real visitor magnet at the stand. We have closed some deals, especially for the new vehicle. We are also very confident about the post-fair business.”
All participants rewarded Messe Karlsruhe with very high satisfaction ratings and a high recommendation rate. 93 percent of visitors give the hygiene concept top marks. All in all, around 97% of visitors are very satisfied with their visit to the fair. Jochen Bortfeld sums up: “In a first survey, the issuers announce higher re-participation intentions. Our commitment and that of the exhibitors was fully worth it.
The next NUFAM will take place from 21st to 24th September 2023 at Messe Karlsruhe.
