【DE】PHOTOPIA Hamburg Presents: World Stars Of Photography – Premiere to feature Ellen von Unwerth, Kristian Schuller and Jimmy Nelson

PHOTOPIA Hamburg is the meeting place for the Who’s Who of the Imaging scene: Three internationally renowned and celebrated photographic artists, including the new industry festival’s honorary patron Ellen von Unwerth as well as Kristian Schuller and Jimmy Nelson, have confirmed their participation in the premiere from 23 to 26 September.

An icon of fashion photography

Ellen von Unwerth, honorary patron of PHOTOPIA Hamburg, was a top model herself before she swapped the catwalk for the camera. A native German, she is today one of the world’s most notable photographers who creates stand-out images of well-known and lesser-known models for renowned magazines. With her exceptional eye and unorthodox approach, she has had a major influence in professional photography over decades. Time Magazine chose her as one of the ten most iconic fashion photographers of all times. Her work has been published by magazines such as Vogue or Vanity Fair. She has worked with megastars the likes of Madonna, Kate Moss and Kim Kardashian, and she discovered young talents such as a 17 year-old Claudia Schiffer. Most recently she exhibited her creations in Stockholm in 2019, in New York City in 2020, and in Tallinn in 2021. In 2002 her work was showcased at Hamburg’s Deichtorhallen venue. Ellen von Unwerth will open PHOTOPIA Hamburg at the Hamburg exhibition complex on 23 September and will give a guided tour of her exhibition titled “Larger than Life”.

A rush of colours

Expressive motifs, staged spectacularly: Kristian Schuller’s photos adorn the front covers of international fashion magazines. The distinguished fashion photographer is well known for his large-format, colourful images. He studied fashion design with Vievienne Westwood and photography with F.C. Gundlach at Universität der Künste in Berlin. He has been working for various fashion magazines and advertisement clients since 2003 and has been involved in the popular TV show “Germany’s Next Top-Model”. Since the second season in 2007 he has taken part in several episodes as a photographer. He was on the jury of the show in 2010, seizing the opportunity to launch a project of his own, the coffee table book “90 Days One Dream”.

Kristian Schuller will be a featured guest on the PHOTOPIA stage delivering a keynote on Friday, 24 September at 4 PM. At 2 PM the same day, Schuller will be present at the Creative Content Conference as a guest of Thomas Gerwers, Editor-in-Chief of Profifoto photography magazine, who will host the four-day live conference programme for professional photographers and content creators. The conference will highlight current trends in professional photographic and video production. In addition, visitors will be able to witness Schuller live at the “Meet & Greet” event at 3 PM in the outdoor area.

Focus on human beauty

British-born Jimmy Nelson began his career as a photographer at the young age of 19. Having spent 10 years at a Jesuit boarding school in northern England, he took off on a solo trip through Tibet on foot (1985). The journey took one year. Upon his return he published his visual diary comprising numerous insightful images of the largely unknown country. He soon got reporting assignments from globally-leading publications on a variety of topics, from the Russian engagement in Afghanistan to the continuing conflict between India and Pakistan over Kashmir, and through to the beginning of the war in former Yugoslavia.

His fascinating portraits of members of traditional ethnic groups and communities earned him an outstanding global reputation. He captures the beauty and uniqueness of humans in many different cultures, staging them aptly within their natural surroundings. His 2013 book “Before they pass away” made a major impact. It documents the author’s 2- to 3-year journey around the world which took him to the tropical forests of central Africa, the deserts of Australia and Namibia, the Amazon rainforest, islands in the Pacific Ocean, and the shores of India. His spectacular shots were exhibited in major capitals of the world, including Paris, New York City, Amsterdam, Maastricht and Berlin. Jimmy Nelson will deliver a keynote address on the PHOTOPIA Stage on Saturday, 25 September at 4 PM.
