Start-Up & Innovation Day at the 29. Eurobike
Friedrichshafen – When there has been talk of progress in the bicycle and mobility industry in recent years, it was mostly about digitization and service. However, the Start-Up & Innovation Day on Wednesday, 1st shows that the hardware as the most important component of the physical product “Bicycle” is at the center of this development and that it is by no means running out of breath. September 2021 at the Eurobike in Friedrichhafen. At the meeting of the start-ups and innovation departments of the bicycle industry, current developments, innovative strength as well as financing and cooperation opportunities will be discussed – in line with the focus topic this year again as a “physical” event, which above all allows a lot of room for exchange and knowledge transfer.

Hardware innovations create new areas of application and open up possibilities for alternative forms of mobility on the way to the traffic turnaround. What path will the bicycle take in the future and what position does it take in micromobility with the development of so-called Xcycles? How can an industry that produces sustainable means of transport become more sustainable itself? What are the challenges with regard to the financing, development and use of new materials?
Turning the bicycle world upside down
To start the conference day, Georgia Yexley from the large sharing provider TIER Mobility investigates the question of how different micromobility concepts compete with the car and can thus be thought of beyond a means of transport. The guests also want to challenge the status quo in the panel discussion on hardware start-ups that break with many conventions to advance the bicycle. For example, bicycle guru Markus Storck cooperates with Porsche Digital at Cyklaer and presents a fully networked e-bike for city and sports, and Jimmy Rusbjerg explains the success of the chainless gearshift Ceramicspeed from Denmark.
Especially in material technology, there is a lot of movement, so the designers Norbert Haller and Kay Hölzig set the course for more sustainability in the bicycle sector with natural materials. Whether wood, coffee capsules or even mushroom cells: there seem to be no limits to creativity to think materials differently. Artificial intelligence has also arrived in the bicycle world and why can’t sharing work in the OEM market instead of buying?
The large panel at the end of the conference will bring the most important current industry topics to the table. Innovations have many facets, take place in large and small parts, are in-industry or pioneering for cyclists and society as a whole. But what does the future of hardware innovation look like in the bicycle industry? How can innovations contribute to more climate protection and how can it be ensured that development does not suffer from the current challenges in the procurement and supply chain?
Award ceremony and networking
In addition to the categories bicycles and e-bikes, components and accessories, prizes for digitization and mobility solutions as well as the Green and Start-Up Awards will be awarded at the Eurobike Award Ceremony directly after the Start-Up & Innovation Day.
After two years of forced break, there is a lot of need for discussion, which can certainly be better satisfied on site in direct exchange than in online conferences. Throughout the day, but especially during lunch break and following the Eurobike Awards, the Start-Up & Innovation Day offers exchange and networking opportunities and the right framework for creative ideas.
