【ES】The book industry proposes a great Social Pact to underpin the growth of reading in Spain

The president of the Federation of Publishers’ Guilds of Spain (FGEE), Patrici Tixis has invited the leaders and political formations of the country to work, together with the book sector, in the achievement of “a great Social Pact for reading, which extends beyond the duration of the legislatures”.

During his speech at the opening ceremony of LIBER, the international book fair, the president of the FGEE pointed out that”reading is an essential tool for promotion and personal, cultural and economic development. The most read people are better prepared to face the future than those who do not read and the societies that read the most are richer and more competitive than those that read less.” In this sense, he recalled that, in Spain,”still a third of Spaniards who are not interested in reading at all. We have one of the lowest rates of reading comprehension and there is a gap of more than ten points between the autonomies that read the most and those that read the least.”

Therefore, it considers it necessary to develop this Social Pact so that it could involve the “Full Government, the autonomies, the City Councils, the political formations; the educational community; bookstores; libraries; to the publishing industry, to public institutions, and to all private companies and social agents that feel challenged by this Social Pact for reading”.

It would be an agreement that should include “a structured strategic plan that specifies dates, actions and commits investments and public resources that allow us to advance at cruising speed, and not stumbling, in the improvement of two indicators: the number of readers and reading comprehension. We would like to reach the year 2030 having clearly improved our reading rates. The later we start, the longer it will take to reduce the competitiveness gap with the countries around us.”

Patrici Tixis acknowledged that the challenge is not simple, “last week we witnessed how a measure widely requested by the cultural sectors, the cultural bonus, became a throwing weapon of the political rifirrafe before knowing how it is going to be implemented.” He also recalled that “from the Chamber of the Book of Spain (publishers, booksellers, distributors and graphic industry) we put ourselves to work and contribute proposals to the tables of the State Pact for the book and reading that crystallized a year ago sponsored by the Ministry of Culture. Today we believe that it is important to extend the Pact by reading to the whole of society, that is why we call it the Social Pact”.
