It is a moment that changes the lives of startup founders: If your own name falls in front of hundreds of experienced industry professionals in the final of the German Gastro Founder’s Award at INTERNORGA, nothing is the same after that. “For us, victory was an absolute accelerator,” recalls Jasmin Seipp, main winner 2019, of the diverse emotions and the enormous tailwind that the victory meant for her café outside the box. Even almost three years later, winning the German Gastro Founder’s Award Jasmin Seipp sometimes still seems like a dream: “We have always understood our café, which offers refugees a professional perspective, as a social enterprise. The fact that we received a gastronomy award – even from the hands of Tim Mälzer personally! – was a huge recognition and motivation for the whole team”. For two weeks, Seipp and her co-founder Julia Harig then gave daily interviews. With a very positive impact on their business: Due to the reporting, significantly more guests suddenly came.

 

Attention of the industry

The attention of the industry also brought many useful contacts: “It’s great to be part of the Leaders Club and participate in the events. The two-year free membership in the gastronomy network helped us a lot, especially in the corona period, emphasizes Seipp. Last but not least, the victory was just right financially: “Only a few days after the final, our deep fryer broke down and we could no longer prepare our bestseller, the falafel. The purchased shopping voucher has finally enabled us to purchase a professional device, says the restaurateur, who has built up a thriving catering business thanks to the main prize of 10,000 euros. Her message to the next generation of industries is clear: “I can only advise all founders to participate.”

 

After the application deadline on the 10th December starts the three-stage selection process: The 30 best concepts after a preselection will initially be presented on Facebook. If you receive the most interactions – likes, shares, comments – in social media voting, you will automatically secure a place in the top 10. Nine other semi-finalists are determined by a jury of experts.

 

Final at INTERNORGA on the 18th March 2022

The ten semi-finalists travel to Hamburg, where they present their concepts to a 15-member jury of renowned experts, including star chef Max Scholl and his wife Ilona from the Berlin restaurant Tulus Lotrek as well as the Hamburg restaurateur and entrepreneur Patrick Rüther. Things get really serious here: According to the criteria of innovation, profitability and personality of the founders, the jury selects the five most promising concepts. As part of INTERNORGA, finally on the 18th March 2022, the trade audience present has the big choice to opt for the main winner concept via live voting after every five-minute live pitches.

 

A winning package worth more than 10,000 euros each awaits all five finalists. This includes, among other things, a gastro box office from orderbird including iPad Air, two years of guest membership in the Leaders Club and start-up advice from ETL ADHOGA. The main winner will receive an additional 10,000 euros as seed capital, the advice of the Leaders Club Germany on the further development of his own concept as well as participation in the International Food Service Forum and the Hamburg Food Service Prize within the framework of INTERNORGA.

 

The industry needs founders

Jury member Tim Koch explains why the German Gastro Founder’s Award is so important for the industry: “Gastronomy in Germany, Austria and Switzerland urgently needs courageous founders and good young talent. But it is also always exciting and inspiring for us jury members with which approaches and concepts the founders dare to venture into self-employment.”
