  • Joy of seeing you again in April 2022

Dortmund – Around 40,000 visitors attended the largest model building meeting of the year from 17th to 20th November 2021 at Messe Dortmund. Despite current debates about the corona pandemic, the mood at the fair was very good and the joy of being able to exchange ideas again was enormous. Together with exhibitors and partners, we were finally able to give visitors a personal live experience again. We are therefore very satisfied with the restart of INTERMODELLBAU and can’t wait to welcome everyone back to Messe Dortmund in April, says Sabine Loos, Managing Director of the Westfalenhallen Group.

Winter edition well implemented: Exhibitors and visitors satisfied

Whether with the whole family or as an experienced model maker, the varied program and the large selection of products from all model making sectors have made INTERMODELLBAU an attractive meeting place for young and old for decades. This was no different with the winter edition: “The way INTERMODELLBAU 2021 was implemented, as well as the business deals we were able to make, remind me of the time before the start of the pandemic,” says Matthias Frank, Operations Manager at BREKINA-Modellspielwaren GmbH.

Even if there was uncertainty among the exhibitors at the beginning, they were positively surprised and satisfied with their participation in the end: “We got involved in this “experiment” during the pandemic and are really satisfied with the decision to be an exhibitor here on site,” emphasizes Christian Weiß, manager at Bachmann Europe Plc.

Numerous exhibitors were particularly satisfied with the implementation of the trade fair concept under the difficult conditions of the corona pandemic. Hendrik Mielke, Head of Research and Development at Gebr. FALLER GmbH “the organization and course of the fair. The monitoring of hygiene measures has also been well implemented. We see happy, grateful faces of the visitors and are enthusiastic about the great atmosphere here on site.” Birgit Weinert, owner of Weinert Modellbau, was also “very positively surprised” by the implementation and mood on site: “The organization of the fair, including the security checks, etc., were really impeccable. The audience in Dortmund also treated each other very considerately, so that all corona measures could be accepted and implemented,” she says. The reunion was really good, says Weinert “I met many interested visitors who were happy to be able to visit a fair again. I, too, enjoyed being present and using direct contact.”

There was also a lot of activity at the Märklin stand. Despite the pandemic, the fair went really well. The visitors were very happy to meet us on site. Here we have the opportunity to bring our concerns to the expert and present our products live to a large audience. That’s why we are already looking forward to INTERMODELLBAU 2022, where we have the novelties 2022 with us,” says Eric Peschel – Head of Event – Gebr. Märklin & Cie GmbH.

Traditional trade fair with convincing location

Many exhibitors appreciate the Dortmund location for its location: “You will meet an international audience here. This is mainly due to the fact that Dortmund is optimally located as a trade fair location for many regions. And INTERMODELLBAU has a tradition. For us, it is an important consumer fair that is constantly growing, says Matthias Frank from BREKINA-Modellspielwaren GmbH. According to Thomas Göbel, owner of model railways, the quality of visitors is also remarkable: “The end users come from a wide variety of regions and countries. They aggressively show their interest and make purchases. It is not only that the fair in Dortmund is super organized, but it is also worth coming back from a business point of view.”

Winter edition attracted national and international visitors to the fair

Visitors to INTERMODELLBAU cannot be deterred from visiting the fair by long distances. According to the survey by an independent trade fair market research institute, all German federal states were represented at the fair. In addition to North Rhine-Westphalia, strong visitor groups came from Lower Saxony, Hesse and Baden-Württemberg, among others. Around 9 percent of visitors even arrived from abroad, including Australians and Africans. The Benelux countries were once again strongly represented this year.

The new ticket shop was particularly praised, which navigates visitors quickly and structured to their ticket. What the ticket shop is in advance of the fair is represented by the visitor guidance during the trade fair period. Therefore, the hall layout by topic was highly appreciated by many visitors. The initial situation as well as the friendliness and helpfulness of the employees and cleanliness in the halls also received top marks. This makes visitors feel comfortable and awarded the overall rating “good” for the atmosphere at the fair.

Top topics model railway, accessories and RC model making

Around 70 percent emphasized that the visit to INTERMODELLBAU was necessary for the exercise of their passion. A particularly high interest was given to railway model making at the fair, followed by model building materials, accessories and tools as well as RC model making. In addition, flight, car, plastic and cardboard models are in great demand.

The show facilities in Halls 4 and 7 as well as the Modellbahn Expert Forum in Hall 4 also scored points. Also one of the best-rated program highlights was the miniature sea of ship model makers in Hall 5 with daily demonstrations of extraordinary ship models as well as the cardboard model makers with their workshops in Hall 8. The range of offers of INTERMODELLBAU was rated “good” by visitors overall.

Finally live again: Satisfied exhibitors and visitors enjoy trade fair feeling

Visitors as well as exhibitors were equally pleased that INTERMODELLBAU took place as a winter edition. In this way, the exhibitors were finally able to exchange ideas in person again, present their products and meet the next generation.

INTERMODELLBAU is an ideal opportunity to address customers who do not attend any other trade fair. Because almost 40 percent of all visitors do not go to any other trade fair of comparable topics, but exclusively to INTERMODELLBAU. More than 70 percent have also been guests at the fair regularly in recent years.

In the survey, visitors stated that they like to visit INTERMODELLBAU to get new ideas, get to know new products and trends as well as to inform themselves personally about products and make their purchases at the fair – a complete package that only the live experience of a trade fair can offer. Thus, the compact winter edition of INTERMODELLBAU also got the overall rating “good”. And the approximately 325 exhibitors were surprised by the crowds of visitors.

Around 90 percent of visitors and 83 percent of exhibitors were already in favor of being present at INTERMODELLBAU in 2022. They don’t have to wait long.

Because the next fair will take place again on a rotational basis in April. From 07. – 10. April 2022, Messe Dortmund opens the halls for hobby tinkerers, experts, families and newcomers to the next edition of INTERMODELLBAU.

INTERMODELLBAU 2021 – This is what the partners and exhibitors say:

Karl-Friedrich Ebe, Trade Fair Organization/Marketing MOBA – Model Railway Association in Germany e. V.

The fair went very well for us. We expected fewer people due to the pandemic, but in fact the influx was striking. The international model railway systems contribute an enormous part to the success of INTERMODELLBAU. There are always large queues of people in front of the facilities. I have spoken to some manufacturers, all of whom appreciate the quality of the visitors. They are people who are enthusiastic about the hobby model railway and take home new ideas after the fair. We are strategic partners of Messe Dortmund and will of course also be part of INTERMODELLBAU 2022 next year.”

Dieter Matysik, President Nauticus e. V. – German umbrella organization for ship model making and ship model sport

INTERMODELLBAU 2021 surprised us positively despite the corona pandemic. Above all, you have enough time to talk to the audience. Customers are really looking for communication and seem totally balanced, as they finally get the opportunity to breathe activity into their hobby again. Dortmund and the surrounding region are indispensable for us as a market. Not only because Messe Dortmund shines with excellent paths, connections and above all its exhibition center. The new entrance north makes INTERMODELLBAU 2021 even more attractive and stands out in particular. As a ship model maker, I have been the sole responsible person in this area for 12 years and say clearly: Without Dortmund, it will not work. INTERMODELLBAU is and remains unique and truly the undisputed number 1. We will come back next year, there is no question.

Werner Schwarz, Vice President of the German Minicar Club e.V. (DMC)

We are very satisfied with the number of visitors. From day to day, there was an increase. The offspring could also be found at INTERMODELLBAU, so that we were able to inspire them specifically for RC cars. We are therefore looking forward to being there again next year.”

Lothar Melchior, Vice President of the German Model Aircraft Association (DMFV):

This year we presented the DMFV Junior Academy at our booth. This was very well received by visitors. In this way, the next generation already gets to know important basics of aerodynamics and gain initial experience with flight model making. A more important step to familiarize future flight model makers with the craft at an early stage.”

Eric Peschel – Head of Event Gebr. Märklin & Cie GmbH.

Despite the pandemic, the fair went really well. The visitors were very happy to meet us on site. Here we have the opportunity to bring our concerns to the expert and present our products live to a large audience. That’s why we are already looking forward to INTERMODELLBAU 2022, where we have the novelties 2022 with us.”

Robin Brand, Head of ScaleART OHG

We are happy to be able to show ourselves again as an exhibitor and to have the opportunity to present our further development. The trade fair in Dortmund is essential for us, as we have many customers in this region. We have been an exhibitor at INTERMODELLBAU for 32 years. Trade fair events are an integral part of our work, so we would always come back.”

Ralf Bäumener, President MFSD e.V.

There were a lot of interested parties with us with whom you could have excellent discussions. The spectators were particularly enthusiastic about our drone balls. Many model makers and model pilots come from the Ruhr area. Therefore, INTERMODELLBAU at the Dortmund location is of course an ideal meeting place.”

Hendrik Mielke, Head of Research and Development Gebr. FALLER GmbH

The organization and course of the fair are really commendable. The monitoring of hygiene measures has also been well implemented. We see happy, grateful faces of the visitors and are enthusiastic about the great atmosphere here. The Dortmund location is part of the industrial motherland, so we meet exactly our target group here. Model making is a widespread hobby in this region, so many dealers are also represented. The interest in our satellite-controlled model vehicles is great, but the limited anniversary model Schloss Bran also attracts the attention of visitors. As soon as the fair opens its doors in 2022, we will also be there again.”

Robert Werner, Managing Director Auhagen GmbH

INTERMODELLBAU in Dortmund is one of the most important trade fairs that we like to attend every year. Dortmund and the region are definitely a very important market for us as exhibitors, so we will also be present next year.”

Matthias Frank, Head of BREKINA-Modellspielwaren GmbH

The way INTERMODELLBAU 2021 was implemented, as well as the business deals we were able to make, remind me of a time before the start of the pandemic. You will meet an international audience here. This is mainly due to the fact that Dortmund is optimally located as a trade fair location for many regions. And INTERMODELLBAU has a tradition. For us, it is an important consumer fair that is constantly growing. Messe Dortmund is also special for me for personal reasons, as I appreciate the uncomplicated trade fair process and the nice, very attentive staff. We are looking forward to the recurring audience and will also be happy to be there next year.”

Jochen Gabbert, General Manager Sales BRAWA Artur Braun Modellspielwarenfabrik GmbH + Co.

INTERMODELLBAU went unexpectedly well for us. Our development status, but also the new products are particularly in demand. The trade fair in Dortmund is very advantageous as a catchment area for the model making industry. As far as the pandemic allows, we will be happy to come back.”

Maciej Radke, owner MBR model

“We’re going through a pandemic right now – it went really well for that. April 2022 is therefore firmly planned again. Certainly then with an even stronger appearance.”

Thomas Göbel, owner model railways purchase-sale

The number of visitors is really surprising. Especially the quality of the visitors is remarkable. The end users come from various regions and countries. They aggressively show their interest and make purchases. It is not only that the fair in Dortmund is super organized, but it is also worth coming back from a business point of view.”

Michael Krumm, Chairman of the BDEF – Federal Association of German Railway Friends e.V.

We had the opportunity to see many of our club members again and exchange ideas after a long time. In essence, however, it is important to us to introduce young people to the model building world at INTERMODELLBAU 2021 with our Junior College Europe (JAC) program. We are happy about the many school classes that can be found here. INTERMODELLBAU is the only large catchment area that also attracts many visitors from abroad and has thus established itself as an attractive and well-known trade fair. We personally like the wide corridors this year that allow the distance, but in particular the many seating options created for visitors have caught our eye. Messe Dortmund really implemented this very well. We always feel welcome at INTERMODELLBAU and will be happy to come back next year to continue to maintain exchange and pursue our youth work.”

Christian Weiß, Manager Bachmann Europe Plc

INTERMODELLBAU 2021 worked well and smoothly despite the current circumstances. We got involved in this “experiment” during the pandemic and are really satisfied with the decision to be here as an exhibitor. We consider the direct contact with the end customer, which we can maintain here, to be very important. The decision to participate as an exhibitor at INTERMODELLBAU 2021 was actually not easy for us, as other trade fairs are also taking place at the same time. Nevertheless, we deliberately chose the fair in Dortmund. The reasons for this are in particular the many dealers represented in NRW as well as the diversity of customers as such. Dortmund is very close to our neighboring countries Netherlands, Belgium, etc., so that a lot of international visitors can also be found.”

Birgit Weinert, owner Weinert Modellbau

INTERMODELLBAU 2021 surprised me very positively. The organization of the fair, including the security checks, etc., was really flawless. The audience in Dortmund also treated each other very considerately, so that all corona measures could be accepted and implemented. I met many interested visitors who were happy to be able to visit a fair again. It also gave me great pleasure to be present and to use direct contact. After experiencing the atmosphere at INTERMODELLBAU 2021, we will be happy to come back in April!”
