【DE】Realignment: ISPO Munich and OutDoor by ISPO are permanently on a new date

Together with the leading sports and outdoor brands, retailers and industry associations, Messe München has made two groundbreaking decisions: From now on, ISPO Munich will take place permanently at the start of the winter season at the end of November and thus leaves the previous January date. The OutDoor by ISPO advances permanently from the end of June to the end of May/beginning of June.

For the year 2022, this means: ISPO Munich 2022 will now take place from 28th to 30th November 2022 (Monday to Wednesday). New date for the OutDoor by ISPO 2022 is from 12th to 14th June 2022 (Sunday to Tuesday).

The permanent postponement of deadlines is a strategic decision due to the far-reaching market changes of recent years. Industry and trade are facing major upheavals in the global supply chain, which has changed order cycles. An ISPO Munich scheduled as before in January or February is therefore too late for many industry participants. The permanently early date for the OutDoor by ISPO also fits much better into the new order cycles.

“When the industry changes, we must also break new ground,” says Klaus Dittrich, Chairman of the Management Board of Messe München. The new dates are the ideal answer to current and future challenges. Above all, however, they offer completely new opportunities for industry and trade.”

Inspiration and activation at the start of the season: A new ecosystem for industry, trade and consumers

Due to the permanent adjustment of deadlines, the leading international trade fairs become even more relevant and a completely new meaning as an important driving force for both the entire industry and the end user. In the future, ISPO Munich will not only be a meeting place for the top decision-makers in the industry and the ideal platform for the brands to place the most important messages for the market, but also the worldwide kick-off event for the winter season, says Dittrich. Here, retailers get an overview of the innovations of the season and can then start the order season, decisions of industry-wide significance are made and at the same time consumers are enthusiastic, inspired and activated.

“We are creating a completely new business ecosystem here, in which ISPO Munich and OutDoor by ISPO become more relevant by adapting to the changed order cycles,” says Tobias Gröber, Head of Consumer Goods Division at Messe München.

New dates offer exhibitors and trade visitors concrete advantages

The realignment of ISPO Munich and OutDoor by ISPO has numerous advantages for exhibitors and trade visitors:

  • The dates are now at the beginning of the industry-specific order cycles
  • Exhibitors and trade visitors now gain an earlier market overview every year
  • With a consumer festival at ISPO Munich, end users are activated for the coming winter season through events and experiences

“We will take the concepts of ISPO Munich and OutDoor by ISPO to a new dimension,” promises Gröber.

For the best effect, the duration of both events will be shortened to three days and a maximum size for stands will be introduced. Currently, a maximum of 150 square meters of stand size are planned for the OutDoor by ISPO and a maximum of 200 square meters of stand size per exhibiting brand for ISPO Munich.

This decision was made after the positive experience with the IAA MOBILITY, which is also responsible for Gröber. Their duration was also shortened with their move to Munich and the size of the exhibition stands was limited for the first time.

OutDoor by ISPO is strengthened as the leading trade fair

With the decision to postpone the deadline of ISPO Munich, OutDoor by ISPO will be the first ISPO fair in 2022 in June. “We are thus strengthening the position of OutDoor by ISPO as the leading international trade fair for the outdoor industry and a source of inspiration for everyone who is interested in outdoor,” says Dittrich.

Next year, OutDoor by ISPO will take place from 12th to 14th June 2022 will take place once in the MOC event center and the former repair plant of the railway located in the immediate vicinity and thus offer new possibilities for brand staging and event formats.

The June date is an intermediate step to an even earlier date from 2023. For 2023, the OutDoor by ISPO will be open from 22nd to 24th May scheduled again at the exhibition center in Munich-Riem. It will then take place permanently at the end of May/beginning of June. “Not only from the OutDoor by ISPO Advisory Board, but also from many other industry participants, we have received broad approval for this decision,” says Gröber.

“Through our decision made together with industry and trade, the industry benefits permanently from the realignment of ISPO Munich and OutDoor by ISPO,” says Dittrich. We can already promise that both trade fairs will be more innovative, groundbreaking, relevant and activating than ever from 2022.

What our partners from industry and trade say

Mark Held, President of the European Outdoor Group

The new date better reflects the realities of the market now and in the future and creates an international flagship event for everyone involved at the right time – before the majority of the seasonal order business is processed. For me, this is also a strong sign of our continued positive, constructive and successful partnership with Messe München and a great example of a real and excellent pre-competitive cooperation.

Another proof of this cooperation is that Messe München is now also bringing forward the dates for ISPO Munich and is doing everything possible to ensure that the event remains a relevant and successful event for the outdoor and sporting goods industry. I congratulate the Messe München team on its courage to make these significant changes for such important events and I look forward to seeing everyone in Munich next June at the OutDoor by ISPO.”

Arne Strate, Secretary General of the European Outdoor Group

The European Outdoor Group has had extensive discussions with our members as well as with other individuals and organizations in the industry, and it is very clear that trade fairs will remain an integral part of the financial year for the entire outdoor and sporting goods sector. If they take place at the right time, there is simply nothing more effective and efficient to get a complete overview of the market, new products and global trends or to exchange ideas with like-minded people and colleagues in just a few days.

For these reasons, we are very pleased that the Messe München team has responded to the needs of our members and the entire outdoor industry. They have agreed to bring forward the date of our joint fair, the OutDoor by ISPO, to the first half of June 2022 – and even earlier in 2023 to the end of May.”

Andrew Denton, CEO of the UK’s Outdoor Industries Association

After many discussions, surveys and discussions with the members of the industry, we are pleased to support the new, earlier dates of OutDoor by ISPO and ISPO Munich. Supply chain problems and delays are currently a global problem for the entire industry. It is important that we anticipate them and that in a world after Corona we again have industry meeting points that take place in the right place, with the right partners and at the right time. The OIA will do everything in its power to support ISPO and we look forward to seeing our members in Munich in 2022.”

Antje von Dewitz, CEO VAUDE

I am very pleased that both ISPO Munich and Outdoor by ISPO (especially from 2023) are moving forward significantly in time and thus becoming real leading trade fairs. The long forced break due to Corona has shown us that the exchange between brands and trade about trends, highlights and innovations through these trade fairs is important for emotional cohesion and professional interaction in our industry. The early date clearly supports this meaningfulness. We at VAUDE will definitely be represented at both trade fairs.”

Ronny Höhn, Managing Director Bergfreunde

I think the fact that OutDoor by ISPO will take place earlier in the year in the future is an important and correct step, as it better reflects the order and seasonal planning cycle and thus meets the needs of traders.

Andy Schimeck, Managing Director Equip Deutschland GmbH

In close coordination between the outdoor and sporting goods industry, the important partners in the sports and outdoor specialist trade and Messe München, we have succeeded in setting the world’s leading trade fairs, OutDoor by ISPO and ISPO Munich for the future on the right dates for all partners. We are sure that the fair will provide the impetus for the industry worldwide in June and in the future in May. And together as an outdoor industry, we will generate worldwide visibility for the cross-industry topics of the future. I am looking forward to a strong trade fair in June and November and appeal to all partners and colleagues to do the same. Only together are we strong.”

Benjamin Thaller, Executive Director of Outdoor Sports Valley

The fair is still a key moment for the industry. It is a meeting place for the outdoor industry, where we can not only exhibit, but also discover and exchange ideas. After two years without a trade fair, we are pleased that Outdoor by ISPO will come back in 2022 with an earlier date. The deadline at the beginning of June fits suppliers’ expectations of market launch in order to meet the reality of the supply chain. Outdoor Sports Valley will be represented at the fair with the “Camp de Base” stand and will gather the brands of the French outdoor industry. This offers them an important opportunity to enter the global outdoor market and be successful there. See you on the 12th. June in Munich.”

Michel Gogniat, Sales Director at Ternua Group

In the last two years, we have all been confronted with major changes. Our industry has also been severely affected in many ways, including the supply chain. Therefore, it is crucial that we can now meet all our most important partners earlier. As always, the Messe München team has an open ear for our needs and is proactive in finding solutions. We are very much looking forward to coming back to Munich and experiencing the lively atmosphere of ISPO and Outdoor by ISPO.”

Hans-Hermann Deters, CEO SPORT 2000 GmbH

We are convinced that the industry needs a strong leading trade fair. With the temporal reorientation, Messe München shows its market and customer proximity. With the new dates, the course has now been set for ISPO and OutDoor by ISPO to become significantly more relevant again. The new dates are ideal for the respective season kick-off and thus the trade fairs will be the place-to-be. Together with the SPORT2000 management team, I am sure that our dealers will use this platform. The decision of the ISPO makers has met our expectations and also the wishes of the dealers. In this respect, we look forward to events with all important participants, at the ideal trade fair location and now also at the right time!”

Stefan Rosenkranz, Managing Director BSI – Federal Association of the German Sporting Goods Industry e.V.

We are pleased that Messe München is responding to the changes that the sports and outdoor industry is also experiencing with a new appointment and trade fair concept. In positive and intensive discussions with BSI e.V. and other important partners, we were able to develop a very good basis for the future. ISPO and Outdoor by ISPO are once again becoming the most important international trend and innovation platforms for the entire sports market. As world’s leading trade fairs, they also serve above all for sports and outdoor specialist retailers for early orientation. In addition to new dates, the content of the fair will focus on product trends and innovations, but also on key industry topics such as sustainability, digitization and above all sports and activity in society.”

Martin Riebel, CEO Schwan Stabilo Outdoor Group

The right scheduling for the major leading trade fairs ISPO and Outdoor by ISPO was a sensitive topic long before Corona. As with so much, Corona now acted as an accelerator here again. The newly set dates make absolute sense because they finally serve as a perfect pre-orientation for retailers before the first shopping appointments, and buyers can get a global overview of new trends, brands and innovations.”

David Ekelund, Chair of the Board, Scandinavian Outdoor Group

Yes! Although we were very much looking forward to meeting, strengthening each other and showing what the Scandinavian design teams have done, we believe that the new event dates are correct. This gives the OutDoor by ISPO and ISPO Munich the right place in the calendar. We promise that we will get back to you with a bang. Let’s go to Munich in 2022!”

Natascha el Mahmoud, General Manager Commercial Europe Jack Wolfskin

With the postponement of ISPO to November, the fair is gaining in importance for us. It thus represents the official start of our sell-in process and creates great added value for all our customers. They can thus get an overview of the upcoming trends and highlights of the season at just the right time at the fair.”
