Great victories, legendary slopes, fast cars from Bavaria: Special show “BMW Motorsport” at RETRO CLASSICS BAVARIA® 2021
Automobiles veterans of all ages: Special show “BMW Motorsport” at RETRO CLASSICS BAVARIA® with exhibits from six decades
Motorsport is as old as motorized private transport. With the triumphal march of the automobile, the initial races quickly became important image events, indicators of the importance and technical superiority of a brand. For more than ninety years, the car manufacturer BMW has also been active in international racing. A special show at RETRO CLASSICS BAVARIA® is dedicated to the exciting topic “BMW Motorsport” (Hall 4A).
Pre-war successes and post-war speedsters
The exhibition spans an arc from the beginnings of BMW motorsport engagement to the 1980s, says curator Uwe Wießmath. You can see some milestones in automotive history, including the 328, the best-known BMW sports car from the pre-war period. The model presented in 1936 drove to victory in the Eifel race in June of the same year. With further successes of the 328 – for example at the German Grand Prix 1938, at the 24-hour race of Le Mans in 1939 or at the Mille Miglia 1940 – BMW wrote a bit earlier racing history.
Due to the destruction in the Munich headquarters and the loss of the vehicle factory in Eisenach, BMW was only able to resume automotive production in 1952. Meanwhile, smaller and smaller vehicles were in demand – such as the BMW 700, which was produced from 1959 and was used in numerous circuit and mountain races and can also be seen at the RETRO CLASSICS BAVARIA®.
Series models and super sports cars
The popular “threesome BMWs”, which achieved considerable success in the touring car version, are indispensable in the streetscape of the seventies and eighties. However, the 320 Group 5 Turbo presented in Nuremberg is fundamentally different from the production model, for example by its significantly reduced weight and a stately power of around 300 hp.
In the mid-1970s, BMW began developing the M1, a futuristic super sports car for which a new racing series was specially created. “In the Procar series, which was held as a brand cup as part of Formula 1, the then crème de la crème of motorsport started,” raves Uwe Wießmath. In total, only 460 copies of the M1 were built. It is therefore very special that we can show one of these vehicles at RETRO CLASSICS BAVARIA®!”
