Hanover. Airbus, Bosch, IBM, VW and Affan Innovative Structures – the premiere of LightCon starts with keynotes from five market-leading companies. On the 1st and 2nd June, the new congress fair for hybrid and sustainable lightweight solutions offers a top-class conference program. The motto is “Lightweight Design on the Path to Circular Economy” and focuses on the global challenges of resource efficiency and climate protection for a sustainable circular economy as well as the reduction of CO2 emissions. The conference language is English.
Already in the opening program of LightCon on the 1st Airbus and Bosch are represented in June: For Isabell Gradert, head of the central research and technology department and general manager for materials technology at Airbus, materials and structures make an important contribution to high-performance and competitive products – across all industries: “Materials will play a key role in terms of lightweight construction and sustainability for the next generation of aviation.”
The title of the subsequent keynote by Lisa Reehten, Managing Director of Bosch Climate Solutions, is “Green is not an option.” According to Reehten, lightweight construction technology is used in various industries, both in the automotive and classic industries. It is precisely this cross-sectional function that is important in order to sustainably influence industries and supply chains. “The lightweight construction industry has the opportunity to accelerate the upheaval of the industry,” emphasizes Reehten.
In the afternoon, Oliver Gahr, Sustainability Leader AI Applications IBM EMEA, talks about how sustainability and digitization are shaping the value chain of the future. “Sustainability goals and digital transformation are closely linked,” says Gahr. In his lecture, Gahr will illustrate this connection and show the opportunities that result from it.
A highlight in the program of the second day of the congress on Thursday, 2. June, the keynote is in the opening panel of Dr. Oliver Schauerte, Head of Materials and Vehicle Projects at Volkswagen. According to Schauerte, lightweight construction is also of considerable importance for electric vehicles – not only to reduce energy consumption, but also in terms of crash loads, tire and brake wear, driving dynamics and permissible total weight. “Today and in the future, lightweight construction will also result from the further and new development of functional materials, such as increasing the efficiency of the electrified powertrain or increasing battery capacities,” says Schauerte.
A spectacular example of lightweight construction is the futuristic museum of the future in Dubai. The local company Affan Innovative Structures provided the design for the composite panels as well as the production and support during installation. The CEO of the company Dr. Amer Affan talks about sustainability in construction at LightCon and presents the new trend in volumetric modular construction. The modules are manufactured like cars in a factory environment and assembled “quickly” on the construction site. A soft wood coated with fibers is particularly suitable as a material for such light and easy-to-transport modules.
LightCon is an annual international congress fair that maps lightweight solutions for a variety of user industries across materials and technologies. The first event will take place on the 1st and 2nd. June 2022 as an independent event parallel to the HANNOVER MESSE in Hall 19. In the exhibition area, lightweight construction providers show solutions from the entire value chain. The LightCon conference is under the motto “Lightweight Design on the Path to Circular Economy” and focuses on the global challenges of resource efficiency, sustainability and climate protection as well as the reduction of CO2 emissions. The patron of this year’s event is Federal Minister of Economics and Climate Affairs Dr. Robert Habeck. The founding partner of LightCon is the lightweight network Composites United.
