Sentient prostheses, superhero suit for neurogenic diseases, sustainably manufactured orthoses made of recycled material – this future of aid supply was at OTWorld from 10th to 13th. May to see. Healthfluencers such as Caroline Sprott, Ms Anna, Alex or prominent aid users such as Fabian Hambüchen, Dirk Nowitzki, Markus Rehm, Johannes Floors and Samuel Koch showed in the world congress and world’s leading trade fair at the Leipzig exhibition center how aid supply can change lives. 18,800 orthopaedic technicians, orthopaedic shoemakers, physicians and physiotherapists from 86 countries convinced themselves of this with 440 exhibitors and 300 congress officers. Every third visitor arrived from worldwide. A delegation from Ukraine affected by the war was also a guest.
OTWorld is the international class reunion. Experts from all over the world and all disciplines come together here. It’s about professional exchange, about arguing together about the best care solutions – and how to make them accessible to patients. Especially in difficult times, personal exchange is needed,” comments Alf Reuter, President of the National Association of Orthopaedic Technology (BIV-OT). “It was overdue and this was noticed in every hall and every hall: The interpersonal – the mutual interest in the experiences of others makes the difference. Only through the exchange of experiences among colleagues does our subject develop further. This year, it was possible to fully concentrate on this exchange. And if you missed one or the other lecture – just look into the digital media library. I will certainly have to make up for one or the other here,” continues Reuter.
World’s leading event with the highest proportion of decision-makers
The interest in new supply options in a time of supply bottlenecks, rising raw material prices, still increased hygiene requirements and a global turnaround is particularly evidenced by the high proportion of decision-makers. With 51 percent, OTWorld 2022 was able to identify the highest proportion of decision-makers in the history of the event.
“I am very pleased that the first OTWorld in presence has been extremely successful after four years. More than 90 percent of exhibitors and visitors had a successful trade fair, want to participate again and will recommend the event, says Martin Buhl-Wagner, Managing Director of Leipziger Messe. “The high international presence is impressive. This shows how necessary cross-border exchange is assessed at home and abroad. The high satisfaction of everyone reflects that industry, crafts and trade need OTWorld for the presentation of innovations and for industry exchange.”
Focus on patients
As always, OTWorld focused on the struggle for the best quality of supply in the World Congress and World’s Leading Trade Fair. It’s about patients with their individual needs and needs. In Leipzig, the aid industry has focused attention away from intensive care patients to the care of people with chronic diseases, disabilities and injuries. Patients talked about the double change in life, firstly due to their illness or injury and secondly through their individual and professional aid care. Exhibitors and speakers presented numerous new care concepts that can change people’s lives. “The fact that these concepts will find their way to patients in the future is the task of politics and the payers,” warned the BIV OT president.
Numerous representatives of payers and politicians used OTWorld for a visit. Already at the opening of OTWorld on the 10th. In May, Federal Minister of Health Prof. Dr. Karl Lauterbach at the medical supply stores and orthopedic workshops in Germany for maintaining the supply of aids during the pandemic period.
Digital production and exchange
Orthopaedic-technical workshops have been innovation drivers in digital production for years. OTWorld 2022 presented itself even more digitally – whether in the start-up zone of the event or with the traditional exhibitors. New this time was the emotional and professional exchange on Instagram and LinkedIn under the hashtags #otworld and #otworld22. The health influencer and lipoedema patient @powersprotte wrote “After the lockdowns, this fair felt like a big class reunion and there are really great ideas sprouting that we want to get rolling for you and the Enlightenment.” Exhibitor @protiq_gmbh: “Incredible how many exciting discussions we have already had here at OTWorld in the last two days – and how far and open the industry is already in the field of additive manufacturing.”
Without tunnel vision and always in an interdisciplinary perspective
The who’s who of the technical orthopedics world sought exchange with the more than 300 speakers in Leipzig. For two years, the congress presidents Prof. Martin Engelhardt and Dipl.-Ing. Mercury Alimusaj the program with symposia, international lighthouses and courses.
In recent decades, medical education, training and further education has been negligently neglected in both amputation surgery and conservative-technical orthopedics. Expertise exists only rudimentary. Techniques that could significantly improve the quality of life of patients are completely forgotten. This threatens to lose know-how that has made care in the German health care system one of the best in the world,” explained Prof. Dr. Martin Engelhardt, Congress President of OTWorld. The OTWorld World Congress, which was held with the participation of 20 international professional societies, is therefore one of the leading orthopedic congresses for me. Here in Leipzig, conservative technical training takes place at a very high international level. Without tunnel vision and always in an interdisciplinary perspective.” This year, the congress presidents focused on child care, register research and sports orthopedics. “In particular, the care options in sports orthopedics show what is possible and how the quality of life of people can be significantly improved through technical care,” says Engelhardt.
Exhibitors and speakers were highly satisfied
The speaker Harmen van der Linde, who came from Nijmegen in the Netherlands, praised the interdisciplinary approach of the World Congress: “OTWorld is lived interdisciplinarity. Here you meet on an equal footing and the professional exchange is at a high level,” explained the specialist in rehabilitation medicine. “For me, OTWorld will continue to be a fixed date in the congress calendar.
The exhibitors also drew a positive conclusion. “It is the only major trade fair in the industry, this is the unique selling point of OTWorld,” as Peter H. Franzel, Head of Global Events, Exhibitions & Sport at the exhibitor Ottobock emphasized. OTWorld is of particular importance. This is where the aid industry meets and shows itself, both nationally and internationally – and with passion, commitment and vision. Leipziger Messe has once again proven to be the perfect trade fair location, says Thomas Geiger, Sales Manager of Bauerfeind AG. Melissa Hobbs, Head of Corporate Communications at medi GmbH & Co. KG draws a very positive conclusion: “OTWorld is the flagship of our industry. The past two years have been bridged digitally, but this industry must also meet in person. She thrives on exchange, on the actions that make the products tangible – this is shown by this year’s edition of the fair.” The same conclusion is Anica Meiertoberens, Event Manager at enovis. “Contact is the most important thing for us here. We are looking forward to being there and finally having nice conversations with customers again. For us, the international audience in particular is a real added value compared to other trade fairs.”
The digital innovations at OTWorld were also very well received. OTWorld is the largest trade fair in the industry, internationality makes it special. The combination of digital formats together with the possibility of direct exchange makes the fair unique,” explains Fabian Christopher Jung, Marketing Director DACH at Össur Germany.
