- Over 900 exhibitors from more than 30 countries
- More than 15,000 trade fair visitors
- Successful premiere of the World of QUANTUM
At the LASER World of PHOTONICS 2022, from 26th to 29th April the international photonics industry live again in Munich. The world’s leading trade fair accompanied an industry that is on the rise worldwide. For the first time, the World of QUANTUM also offered a stage for the international quantum community. In addition, it became clear what central role photonics plays in medical technology, electromobility and industrial production, for example.
The LASER World of PHOTONICS took place without the parallel congress due to the corona-related postponement, next year the industry will meet again in the usual format in Munich.
Dr. Reinhard Pfeiffer, Deputy Chairman of the Management Board of Messe München, sums up: “The response significantly exceeded our expectations: More than 15,000 visitors traveled to Munich. This is a good 80 percent of the level of the trade fair participants of the preliminary event 2019, an outstanding result for a trade fair in corona times. 39 percent of the visitors came from abroad, with the USA and Israel, among others, at the forefront. We are also very pleased about the successful premiere of the World of QUANTUM, platform for a future technology that is largely based on photonics and predicted an at least as important future.”
“The LASER is alive again!” says Dr. Wilhelm Kaenders, Chairman of the Exhibitor Advisory Board and Board Member of TOPTICA Photonics AG. After three years, all the innovative power of the industry is once again evident, which has so far found its way through the various crises very well. With the Quantum theme area, an old gate for the future of the photon is being re-established.”
Trade fair reflects international growth market
The fair was an important milestone for an industry on the upswing. More than 900 exhibitors from more than 30 countries (2019: 1,325 exhibitors from more than 40 countries) presented themselves, including 15 national and international joint stands. The top ten exhibitor countries after Germany were USA, France, Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Switzerland, China, Lithuania, Netherlands, Canada, Finland and Japan. Among the top ten visitor countries from abroad were Switzerland, Italy, Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Israel, France, USA, the Czech Republic, Austria, the Netherlands and Spain.
“The growth potential of photonics is enormous,” explains Jörg Mayer, Managing Director of the industry association SPECTARIS. Experts predicted an average annual growth of more than six percent and a total turnover of almost 60 billion euros for the German photonics industry alone by 2025 in 2020. I am confident that this target will be achieved, if not exceeded, despite the current global challenges.”
Premiere: World of QUANTUM
The World of QUANTUM took place for the first time in its own hall, which immediately met with a very positive response: More than 60 percent of all trade fair visitors came to this new area, more than 90 percent of them were enthusiastic about the World of QUANTUM offer in a trade fair survey. It is currently the world’s largest platform to network science, industry and users in the field of quantum technology, to inform about current research results and to present initial application examples of this future technology. IBM Quantum let a model look into the interior of its quantum computer. And at the Qiskit Hackathon, realized in cooperation with the partners IBM Quantum and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, junior teams were able to test themselves in the programming of quantum computers. “The World of QUANTUM was an enormous success,” says Dr. Lechner, Executive Director at Messe München. “Together with our partners, we have succeeded in a great start, together we will continue on this path.” Dr. Walter Riess, Manager Quantentechnology at IBM Research Europe, adds: “The World of QUANTUM more than exceeded my expectations. I’m already looking forward to next year.”
Exhibitors are looking forward to our trade fair presence again
After more than three years of forced break, the importance of the fair for establishing contact and maintaining contact with our customers has once again increased significantly. The positive response to our booth confirms this very clearly,” explains Markus Spanner, CEO Physik Instrumente. Dr. Thomas Fehn, Managing Director Sales and Service TRUMPF Lasertechnik, says: “LAS World of PHOTONICS is one of the central platforms to present our latest ideas and exchange ideas professionally with our international customers.” Jürgen Niederhofer, General Manager MKS Instruments, says: “Our expectations regarding the number of visitors and customer inquiries have so far been exceeded. The quality of the leads is very good and interesting conversations have taken place.” Benjamin Rudolph, co-founder, was an exhibitor for the first time with his start-up SI Stuttgart Instruments: “The fair is ideal for a network meeting and the establishment of new partnerships. In addition, we take exciting leads back to Stuttgart. We are particularly pleased that with the 1. Place at the Innovation Award.”
Award-winning innovations in the industry
The Innovation Award was presented for the second time together with Europa Science. A jury consisting of top experts from industry and science selected the most innovative products in a total of six categories, in addition SI Stuttgart Instruments was awarded as the overall winner. The winners in the individual categories are Hamamatsu Photonics Germany, Glassomer, SI Stuttgart Instruments, QiOVA, ID Quantique and Xarion Laser Acoustics.
Project manager Anke Odouli summarizes: “The industry has once again impressively shown the key role photonics plays for innovations in many other areas. And our extensive supporting program focused on the exchange with experts and knowledge transfer.”
The next LASER World of PHOTONICS will take place from 27th to 30th. June 2023 on the grounds of Messe München, the next World of Photonics Congress from 25 to 30 June 2023.
