A dozen young designers show from the 13th to the 15th. May 2022 at opti his reinterpretation of glasses and thus begins to win the first opti BOX AWARD. Design, sustainability, functionality, technology and marketing are the criteria. The award ceremony will take place live on site on Saturday at 12.30 p.m. in Hall C2 in the area of opti BOXEN.
“So cool and such an honor!” The Italian eyewear blogger and social media expert Giulia De Martin (Behind My Glasses) is pleased to be one of the jury members of the first opti BOX AWARD – and to the exciting designs that have been announced. Twelve cool start-ups present themselves at the spring edition of opti in the YES independent design area.
Traditional craftsmanship meets state-of-the-art technology
Among them LEINZ Eyewear Berlin (opti BOX 1). For two years, founder, managing director and designer Beate Leinz has been combining traditional Italian eyewear craftsmanship with state-of-the-art 3D printing technology from Germany. It is important to her to use high-quality materials and to be sustainable: “New products and processes are developed with ecological aspects in mind.” Even the elegant glasses cases and advertising displays are made of resource-saving, recycled leather. Frameshaper Eyewear (opti BOX 3) also attaches importance to sustainability. Due to the local production in Leipzig, postal routes and material shipping are minimized. Otherwise, it says “Made for you!”: Not only can eyewear models be adapted, but also, both for the optician and customer, own shapes can be designed.
The sophistication is in the details
MYDOT (opti BOX 5) is equally about individuality. “We do not know the stories of many fellow human beings and should have understanding for all their views and peculiarities. Because these are their pivotal points,” explains customer advisor Sabrina Giordano, which is behind the noticeable “dots”, i.e. points on the feather-light spectacle frames.
Not only German, but also international start-ups are from 13th to 15th. May in the opti BOXES. MITA Sustainable Eyewear (opti BOX 6) from the Sunshine State of Florida already bears environmental awareness in its name. Founded in 2020, the young US company convinces with natural sophistication in design, materials and production – and with its recycling principle: Stylish MITA glasses consist of five recycled PET bottles. The cheerful and daring vision and sunglasses collections of Proud Eyewear (opti BOX 7) from Valencia, Spain, are also particularly in production. “We use five hinges and a safety screw for all frames,” explains founder Marce Garcìa at least as proudly as the “Proud” in the company name suggests.
Speaking of technically refined: RAYDIANT (opti BOX 11) from Cologne offers an exciting clip system and the possibility of custom-made. Individualization is also very popular in opti BOX 10, at O-CCX EYEWEAR. Peter Meyer, who founded the Osnabrück start-up: “With their individual design design design language, the glasses conceal the nose area if desired or accentuate special facial features.”
Making the eyewear industry more inclusive
Everyone should be able to find correctly fitting glasses, is also the approach at Reframd (opti BOX 13). All versions, such as the team around Shariff Vreugd and Ackeem Ngwenya, would be produced to order, which avoids stocks and wastes a minimum of resources. Reframd shares the opti BOX 13 with LooC, another Berlin company that has a new function in Munich to measure the face for the perfect setting in its luggage. LooC’s products are for the eyewear manufacturer, the stationary optician and online trade as well as the ophthalmologist alike. The portfolio ranges from virtual eyewear fittings on different platforms to a digital visual and innovative color test.
Made in Munich
MUNIK (opti BOX 8) has a home advantage in the Munich exhibition halls. At MUNIK, no socket is thrown away, but at least donated; new models are produced in small quantities and designed to be stable for a long service life. Social media manager Sophia Lindner: “We want to create highlights that are fairly calculated and give a lot of pleasure.” Another start-up comes from the opti location in Munich. Planet Pop by p5 Consulting is just one year old and shows its environmentally friendly children’s glasses collection in BOX 4. Each pair of glasses is made of 47 percent vegetable, renewable, BPA-free material, in 100 percent sustainable, renewable cork containers and with a recycled microfiber cloth for the lenses, explains owner Petra Eckhardt-Köstler. LEGENDS (opti BOX 12) have also only been around since 2021 and the enthusiasm is great to be part of opti 2022: “We are already looking forward to having taken another step towards a real community,” says Fürth in Franconia. Like the majority of opti-BOX AWARD candidates, LEGENDS is committed to sustainability, with all components, whether with “Made in Germany”, new materials such as the high-performance plastic polyamide 11 based on bio and regional projects, e.g. Tree donations.
Four jurors, four times enthusiasm
Bettina Reiter, head of opti and jury member of the first opti BOX AWARD: “Design, sustainability, functionality, technology and marketing are the criteria for our award. I am thrilled with what is offered in each and every one of these areas. For me, basically every one of the opti BOX companies is already a winner per se.” “We live and love the world of glasses,” juror Giovanni Graffweg from Optik Breiderhoff in Essen reaffirms the innovative power of the start-ups. Also for Dr. Jürgen Bräunlein, as editor-in-chief of the trade magazine eyebizz on the jury, the opti BOXEN are the absolute highlight of the fair.
The awarding of the opti BOX AWARD will take place on Saturday, 14. May 2022, at 12.30 p.m. in the YES independent design Area in hall C2 at the opti BOXES.
