From the 30th May to 3. June 2022, Leipzig is the host city of the international World Canals Conference (WCC). Experts and representatives from politics and administration, associations, companies and water sports enthusiasts will discuss challenges in the preservation, development and sustainable management of inland waterways in the KONGRESSHALLE at Leipzig Zoo.
The international conference, which has been held under the auspices of Inland Waterways International (IWI) since 1998, will take place for the first time in Germany. With around 90 international contributions and more than 15 excursions into the Central German water landscape, the city of Leipzig, together with its partners – the Leipzig Trade Fair, the European Metropolitan Region of Central Germany, the Green Ring Leipzig and Leipzig Tourismus und Marketing GmbH – presents a demanding conference program to which around 300 participants from all over the world are expected.
Central Germany is considered an impressive setting for the landscape transformation of a lignite mining region towards diverse water landscapes. The WCC in Leipzig is therefore also under the motto “Redesign landscapes – waterways in transition” and is particularly dedicated to the question of how tourism, regional development, flood and environmental protection, climate adaptation and urban renewal can be effectively promoted in the midst of structural change. The conference is accompanied by exciting excursions to the Leipzig Neuseenland, the Lusatian Lakeland, the Saale-Unstrut region, the Magdeburg waterway crossroads and the World Heritage region of Anhalt-Dessau-Wittenberg, among others. A highlight will be the excursion to FERROPOLIS, the city of iron on Lake Gremmin.
Under the heading “Water meets culture”, the organizers of the WCC 2022 have already intensively networked the event with the cultural scene in Leipzig and Central Germany over the past few months. In order to be able to show the metamorphosis of an entire region from a cultural perspective, interviews and clips with various cultural actors from Leipzig and the region were created. All contributions are available on the conference website.
