【UK】Come and work in Commercial Marine

Training And Careers Thursday

Maritime Training & Careers Day on Thursday 23 June, the third day of Seawork, is aimed at students aged 16-19 years. Working with Maritime UK and the Solent LEP, Seawork is hosting a programme of presentations, competitions, quizzes and job vacancies all designed to engage and deliver.

The multiplicity of opportunities available in the Commercial Marine world will be a surprise to some and a magnet for those looking for deeply absorbing and rewarding roles (or even a change of career direction). This attractive, multifaceted sector is looking to attract trainees and graduates.

Seawork exhibitors will show the huge scope of roles in the industry both on-the-water and shore-based, the opportunities and schemes and assistance available for those with or without qualifications.

Philip Hoar, Maritime Apprenticeship and Development Coordinator at UKSA, will present UKSA’s apprenticeship schemes including the UKSA Level 3 Workboat Crew Member Apprenticeship and Level 2 Port Operative programme designed to give the apprentice all the skills, knowledge and behaviours to work on a wide variety of specialist vessels. Anyone aged 18 or over can apply, and there is no upper age limit.

Based at Solent LEP in Portsmouth, Lorna Wagner, Programme Manager (Careers and Outreach), leads the careers activity at Maritime UK, working with employers and educators to promote the many exciting opportunities in the sector. She will speak on the activities and supporting resources, sharing best practice from around the regions.

Speakers from SeaBot Group, BAM Nuttall, Volker Stevin, MacDuff Ship Design and Jackson Civil Engineering will also share their knowledge and experiences.

There is a complementary programme of exhibitor presentations every 15 minutes, and a quiz with 5 questions to ask 10 -15 participating exhibitors, covering entry level into the organisation, apprenticeships, graduate schemes and employment.

A competition for students to take a photograph at the event for use on social media will see the best winning a day of immersive work experience for the individual student and a workplace visit for their class.
