At the world’s leading trade fair for the pet industry Interzoo 2022, both exhibitors and trade visitors drew an extremely positive conclusion: “We can already imagine coming back to the next Interzoo today,” said over 90 percent of the respondents. Despite difficult framework conditions, the Interzoo organizer Wirtschaftsgemeinschaft Zoologischer Fachbetriebe GmbH (WZF) succeeded in gathering the global industry at the world’s largest trade fair for pet supplies in Nuremberg in May 2022: 27,861 trade visitors from 129 countries informed themselves about the latest food and care products, accessories and services for pets. The 1,328 exhibitors came from 59 countries.

It was clearly felt that the international pet industry knew how to use the long-awaited industry platform Interzoo to be able to show its professional audience innovations and find new sales partnerships. The positive mood as well as the still overwhelmingly high internationality of visitors confirm the status of Interzoo as the world’s leading trade fair,” sums up Norbert Holthenrich, President of the ideal carrier of Interzoo, the Zentralverband Zoologischer Fachbetriebe e.V. (ZZF).
Gordon Bonnet, Managing Director of the Wirtschaftsgemeinschaft Zoologischer Fachbetriebe GmbH (WZF), organizer of Interzoo, is also pleased to take stock: “Our expectations, but also those of exhibitors and visitors, were completely exceeded. Some countries were unable to participate due to the corona pandemic or the war in Ukraine. We consider the fact that, despite the continuing uncertainty, so many industry participants had firmly planned the appointment of Interzoo as a high proof of confidence in Interzoo and its organizer WZF, says Bonnet.
Exhibitors are extremely satisfied
The results of the exhibitor survey confirm the proof of confidence: For nine out of ten exhibitors, Interzoo is therefore important to extremely important in the context of all its marketing and sales activities. 95 percent were satisfied with the overall success to very satisfied (2018: 88 percent) Their concrete trade fair goals were achieved by more than 94 percent of exhibitors (2018: 87 percent).
In addition, the exhibitors rated the quality of the trade visitors at their stand 96 percent positively. With their offer, the companies reached their most important target groups 97 percent. 96 percent were able to establish completely new business connections and nine out of ten exhibitors expect a post-trade fair business.
International trade visit
Most foreign visitors came from Italy (1,653). This was followed by Spain with 1,174 admissions, the Netherlands with 1,089 and Great Britain and Northern Ireland with 1,060 accesses. 966 experts from France visited the fair in Nuremberg and 958 experts from Poland. Germany was represented with 7,698 visits.
A total of 22,807 experts from Europe flocked to the world’s leading trade fair. 1,571 visitors came from South-East Central Asia and 1,218 from the Middle East. 1,014 trade visitors arrived from South and Central America and 505 trade visitors from North America. In addition, Africa was represented with 491 accesses to Interzoo and Australia and Oceania with 255.
Pet trade and online trade with decision-making authority
The high proportion of decision-makers among visitors is an important feature of Interzoo: 93 percent of trade fair visitors participate in procurement decisions in their company. Interzoo 2022 visited more professionals from larger companies with more employees than in previous years. In addition, with 15.2 percent, many more online retailers took part (2018: 8.8 percent). The largest trade visitor groups included self-employed entrepreneurs (38 percent), managing directors (14 percent), division and branch managers (15 percent), department heads (16 percent) and other specialist employees.
Trade visitors: Expectations fully met!
The expectations of the visitors were fully met: According to the survey, almost all trade fair visitors (98 percent) were satisfied to very satisfied with the general offer. The information and contact options at the fair also corresponded 98 percent to the expectations of trade visitors.
All in all, visiting the fair was a success for over 96 percent, and almost everyone (97 percent) could say: “Interzoo helped me something.”
Stage for novelties and startups
Many novelties and special product highlights could be discovered at the exhibitors’ booths and in the Product Showcase. In particular, 88 percent of trade visitors praised the range of novelties and trend-setting trends at Interzoo.
A particularly large number of young companies presented themselves at this year’s Interzoo: More than 50 startups attracted attention at the sponsored joint stand and the international startup area in Hall 11. The “Fresh Ideas Stage” offered for the first time at Interzoo 2022 gave the additional boost to the market: “On stage, around 20 entrepreneurs showed their ideas to a wide audience or drew attention to their innovations as part of the Fresh Ideas Contest in order to attract sales partners or first customers. The experts reacted with great curiosity and interest to the innovations shown,” says Dr. Rowena doctor, Head of Measure at the WZF.
In addition, visitors used the lecture program in large numbers to inform themselves about market opportunities and trends: On the 23rd May, one day before the start of the fair, 250 professionals from 30 countries visited the Petfood Forum Europe organized by WATT Global Media in cooperation with Interzoo. On the following days, more than 120 industry participants took part in the Interzoo Sustainability Session and more than 60 people got marketing tips in the Petfluencer Session. The five country sessions also attracted many dealers and manufacturers who informed themselves about international markets and new opportunities.
The right mix of real and digital
“After the pandemic-related time without physical trade fairs, the focus at Interzoo 2022 was primarily on the personal encounter of industry participants. This applies to the discussions at the booth, discussions in the specialist forums or networking as part of the Interzoo party in the park, explains Dr. Doctor and adds: “With the new Interzoo app and the digital offer of the Interzoo Academy, we have supported personal trade fair participation in the best possible way and created organizational freedom for the direct experience of the fair. A large part of the lectures are available online in the Interzoo app or at the Interzoo Academy. And the established contacts can now also be easily processed digitally afterwards.”
The next Interzoo in Nuremberg will open its doors from Tuesday, 7. May to Friday, 10. May 2024.
