Crop cultivation experts from six countries present their cultivation strategies at the Kirschgartshausen test site near Mannheim – Ukrainian research couple on site
At the International Cultivation Comparison Winter Wheat on the DLG Field Days, which took place from the 14th to the 16th. June 2022 in Kirschgartshausen near Mannheim, the National Agricultural University NUBiP, Kiev (Ukraine), will also participate. Professor Viktor Kalenski and his wife Svitlana, both of whom conduct research at the Kiev University, will be available on site at the DLG stand (VK51) for professional exchange and discussions with media representatives. Both speak German.
The international comparison of winter wheat cultivation methods has been taking place since 1988, when the first DLG field days were carried out on Gut Schwarzenraben in Lippstadt (North Rhine-Westphalia), as part of the specialist program. This year, crop cultivation experts from a total of six countries will present their strategies for wheat cultivation. This gives visitors a unique opportunity to get to know a wide variety of cultivation philosophies from different European growing areas as well as from Germany, to discuss them with the wheat experts directly on the plant population and to derive conclusions for their own wheat cultivation.
In addition to the team from Ukraine, wheat experts from Denmark, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Sweden and Germany participate in the wheat cultivation comparison 2022.

Participants adapt their procedures to the cultivation conditions
The participants have some difficulties to master, which were “inherited” from the host company. These are the dry-hot weather conditions of the upper Rhine moat, which differ significantly from the home conditions of the participants. In addition, there is the unfavorable pre-fruiting (wheat, barley, wheat), with which all exhibitors have to cope on the field day site, and the rather late sowing in November, which was ultimately due to the uniform sowing date – all varieties had to be available.
The participants knew about these conditions in advance and adapt to them with their procedures. During the DLG field days, there will certainly be many discussions about the appearance of the demonstration parcels and the “unusual” procedural steps. In return, the usual harvest in the exact test will be dispensed with this year.
As usual, all measures for assessing the procedures are accurately documented. The information is provided to visitors on the DLG field days at the demo parcels of the participants and as a brochure. DLG is supported by the company FarmFacts GmbH from Pfarrkirchen.
The economic assessment of the procedures is based on a uniform, agreed price and cost framework, which should reflect the conditions of the cultivation year and the growing region. This is difficult under this year’s conditions, but the disclosure of this framework data allows visitors to compare it with their own company.
The DLG field days will take place from the 14th to the 16th. June 2022. They are provided by the DLG in cooperation with the Ministry of Food, Rural Affairs and Consumer Protection Baden-Württemberg (MLR), Raiffeisen Waren-Zentrale Rhein-Main eG Köln together with Raiffeisen Waren GmbH Kassel, ZG Raiffeisen Karlsruhe and Vereinigte Hagelversicherung. The Union for the Promotion of Oil and Protein Plants (Berlin), the Federal Institute for Agriculture (BLE) in Bonn, Südzucker AG (Mannheim) and the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Transport, Agriculture and Viticulture (MWVLW), Rhineland-Palatinate in Mainz act as specialist partners.
