The stage is set for around 300 exhibitors from 23 countries and an exceptional supporting programme: “In addition to new products by represented companies, DACH+HOLZ International 2022 will stand out for its unprecedented number of unique highlights,” said Robert Schuster, Exhibition Director. “Opening with the Timber Construction European Championship, which was also postponed to July, continuing with spectacular shows by STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® and culminating in the industry evening of live music in the open air on Thursday, to which exhibitors and visitors are cordially invited.” Here is an overview of the programme highlights of DACH+HOLZ International 2022:
Tuesday: Young talent and influencer day
Staff recruitment is currently one of the key issues affecting most skilled trade businesses. This is why DACH+HOLZ International will be putting the spotlight on young talent and influencers on Tuesday 5 July (Forum, Hall 6.212). From 10 am to 5 pm, the Forum programme will supply first-hand information on all aspects of staff recruitment and retention. Young skilled craftsmen and women will present themselves and their channels in Meet & Greet sessions. In talks on social media, renowned influencers will explain how businesses can improve their online presence. DACH+HOLZ will also provide all attendees with the opportunity to network face-to-face. The day will be rounded off with a “Workwear Live” event presented by influencers.
Recruiting staff means recruiting people
Is finding staff and apprentices a mission impossible? According to Jörg Mosler, expert on staff recruitment for skilled crafts, the biggest problem for most businesses is their obscurity as employers. His motto is: “If they don’t know you, they can’t work for you!”. This is why it is especially important to dare to show what happens behind the scenes at the company, tell stories online and by doing so, inspire emotions. According to Mosler, successful recruitment of staff and apprentices works on the basis of a very simple principle: “A business attracts what it radiates.” In his keynote speech at 2 pm on Tuesday 5 July, Jörg Mosler will offer ideas and strategies on how a company can position itself as an employer brand, perform targeted online marketing of this brand, and become a magnet for staff and talent.
Lunchtime snacks for the construction site: Ideas from Michelin-starred chef
Do we always have to have sandwiches for lunch? “Absolutely not,” according to Michelin-starred chef Anthony Sarpong, as skilled craftsmen and women can cook too! Lunchtime snacks for the construction site can be varied, healthy and delicious. How? That is what the Michelin-starred chef will be demonstrating live on the Forum stage at DACH+HOLZ – with samples provided for visitors to taste. Anyone interested in experiencing a taste sensation can drop by the Forum in Hall 6 between 12 noon and 2 pm on Tuesday 5 July.
Wednesday: Women in skilled crafts – why ever not?
In collaboration with zunftschwestern, the German network supporting women in the construction industry, this is the motto that DACH+HOLZ International will be using on Wednesday 6 July 2022 to highlight women working in the sector. The key issues of the day will not only be of interest to women, but will appeal to all visitors with a series of success stories, practical tips and lively discussions in the Forum. The day will start with the presentation of the new official logo “Handwerk ist hier auch Frauensache” (skilled crafts are a women’s issue too) by Christa Schneider, first chair of the Arbeitskreis Köln der Unternehmerfrauen im Handwerk (Cologne-based working group of skilled craftswomen). Astrid Braun-Höller, expert on human resources and strategy, will explain how the best talent can be found and retained using smart strategies. Sebastian Schmäh, Managing Director of timber construction firm Holzbau Schmäh, will explain why he employs increasing numbers of women in his business. zunftschwestern will also be inviting visitors on a tailor-made trade fair tour for women – concluding with a Prosecco reception for socialising and networking. Registration is open now at https://www.zunftschwestern.de/events/impulse/.
Special guests: Dachdecker-Mädelz
In 2018, they made their first grand appearance at DACH+HOLZ International: Dachdecker-Mädelz (roofer girls) is a group of women with members from all around Germany who campaign for women and girls working in the roofing trade. The group currently has 90 female roofer members, who are committed to supporting young female roofers and performing public relations work for their trade. They will, of course, be attending DACH+HOLZ in Cologne again this year and will be rocking the trade fair stands on Friday. At 11 am on Wednesday, they will be in the Forum discussing how to deal with stereotypes in everyday working life.
Thursday: the future of construction
Financing construction: What will construction cost in the future? Modern building technology: How can business premises be made self-sufficient? Supply security: What opportunities are there to secure the supply of raw materials for the construction industry? This and other questions concerning the future of construction will be discussed in the Forum on Thursday 7 July. Members of the construction industry and skilled crafts sector will be there to report on their experiences, present innovations and highlight ways in which skilled craft and construction businesses can future-proof themselves. Start-ups will also demonstrate their innovations on Thursday and Friday afternoon. The newcomers will have 7 minute pitches in which to inspire their audience with their new products.
Industry evening of live music
Another opportunity for networking will be provided by the new industry evening at DACH+HOLZ, which, because it is a July event, will be held in the open air. All the competitors from the Timber Construction European Championship will be attending and introduced on stage. A Zimmerklatsch (carpenters’ hand clapping song), a band playing live music and food trucks will make for a great atmosphere with tasty cuisine.
Friday: Industry trends and architects’ afternoon
Building with alternative raw materials, green roofs versus photovoltaics and recycling in timber construction are further current issues for the roofing industry that will be discussed in the Forum on Friday 8 July. With a midday talk on future building materials, a timber construction company’s report on its experience of building with straw, and key note speeches aimed specifically at architects, trade fair visitors will gain valuable expert knowledge and practical tips on Friday too.
Timber Construction European Championship
In Hall 7 from 5 to 8 July, timber will be assembled, sawn and screwed at the Timber Construction European Championship 2022. Trade fair visitors will be able to watch Europe’s young talent live in action and cheer on their favourite team. A total of seven nations will be taking part. Teams from Germany, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy and Hungary will be competing against one another. It will also be the first time a female carpenter has taken part in the Timber Construction European Championship: 24 year old Yvanka de Reus is the winner of the Dutch Carpentry Championships 2022 and Dutch candidate for WorldSkills 2022 in Shanghai. The high point of DACH+HOLZ International will be when the European Champion in the individual and team competition is announced on Friday 8 July. More information can be found at https://www.tce-championship.eu/
STIHL TIMBERSPORTS®: The major league of lumberjack sports
Visitors will also be able to experience a new spectacular event up close over the four days of the trade fair with STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® – the master league of lumberjack sports. Over several shows, Germany’s best lumberjack sportsmen will present the six disciplines of the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® Series: three with an axe and three with a saw. Visitors will also have the opportunity to test their own talent as a lumberjack: given professional instructions by the sportsmen, they can use a Single Buck, a two metre long single man cross-cut saw, to saw their own “cookie” from the block and take it home as a souvenir. Support will be provided by two top athletes, including Danny Martin, two-time German Champion, who is the best in his discipline in Europe. On Wednesday 6 July, two exceptional female athletes, current German Champion Nina Pokoyski and two-time world record holder Alrun Uebing, will also be taking part. The shows will be held on the open-air exhibition ground between Hall 6 and Hall 7.
