Annual result 2021: Sales with 16.582 million Euro above the previous year’s level – fainamic foundation secures liquidity – 2022 promises significantly more trade fair implementations than the previous year
Friedrichshafen – In the third year of the pandemic, Messe Friedrichshafen reports positive results – more sales and important strategic decisions shaped the financial year 2021. “The pandemic is not over yet and yet we have managed to prepare the company well for the future with the right strategic decisions,” emphasizes trade fair managing director Klaus Wellmann. With 16.582 million In the past financial year, sales in the past financial year are well above the level of the previous year, which was also characterized by Corona (2020: 6.2 million euros). The current trade fair year is also going promisingly: Nine own and guest events have already been implemented by the trade fair team from Lake Constance since the end of the lockdown in March 2022. A premiere of superlatives is from the 13th to the 17th. July: Eurobike will take place in Frankfurt for the first time. The leading international trade fair for bicycles and future mobility already records new records in the number of exhibitors and occupancy. It will be implemented by the team from Lake Constance as part of the fairnamic joint venture, which was launched in 2021 together with Messe Frankfurt.
The second half of 2022 will also be busy. The exhibition center in Friedrichshafen is the venue for own events such as the Interboot (17th–25. September), the fair for Ross und Reiter Pferd Bodensee (14th-16th) postponed from February to autumn. October) as well as the Vertical Pro (25. & 26. November). Equally attractive are the twelve halls and two foyers for the holding of external events: This is how the ZDF show “Wetten, dass..?” and the SPD State Party Congress on the same weekend in November use the double occupancy of the exhibition center and provide the trade fair city on Lake Constance with a Germany-wide media presence.
Fiscal year 2021
The pandemic also shaped the year 2021: Only five out of 13 own trade fairs and 32 guest events could be held in the second corona year. This resulted in 174,771 visitors (2020: 157,230) and 3,410 exhibiting companies (2020: 1,489). Remarkable: Despite lockdown and political restrictions, the first event Vertical Pro was successfully launched. The use of the exhibition center was further guaranteed by alternative display options, such as occupancy with the district vaccination center.
The 2021 financial year also marked an important strategic decision: The Friedrichshafen and Frankfurt trade fairs launched fairnamic – a cooperation that has never existed before in the trade fair industry. The mobility joint venture organizes the Eurobike trade fairs in Frankfurt and AERO in Friedrichshafen. The founding of fairnamic was an important and successful step that will continue to pay on the annual result of Messe Friedrichshafen, which holds 51 percent of the joint venture. Eurobike can continue to grow in terms of content and space at another location under its own leadership – an adequate representation of this future industry would no longer have been possible on Lake Constance. In addition, Messe Frankfurt’s financial participation creates a solid financial basis for the coming years,” explains CFO and fairnamic CFO Stefan Mittag. While the former team of Messe Friedrichshafen is entrusted with the implementation of the Eurobike and AERO trade fairs, Messe Frankfurt contributes financially and with its global network to the subsidiary fairnamic.
The trade fair company on Lake Constance achieved sales of 16.582 million in 2021. Euro (2020: 6.2 million euros). This means an annual result of 2.22 million euros. After Messe Friedrichshafen had to suspend the rent payment to the ownership company, Internationale Bodenseemesse GmbH, in 2020 as well as to claim financial support from the main shareholder, the city of Friedrichshafen, due to the pandemic, this is not the case in 2021 and 2022. On the contrary: In 2021, a high rent payment was made possible. This also further promotes debt relief and allows the trade fair to act financially independently.
Financial year 2022
Due to the pandemic, the current trade fair year started with seven cancellations or postponements, including the Motorradwelt Bodensee and the spring fair IBO. The trade fair calendar has been well occupied since the end of March. A total of 15 trade fairs, guest events and corporate events took place until the end of June 2022. Not only the self-trade fairs AERO, Motorworld Classics Bodensee, My Cake, Tuning World Bodensee and HAM Radio proved that meetings, networking, exchange and experiences were long awaited live by exhibitors and visitors. Another 21 events, including the well-booked leading trade fair Eurobike in Frankfurt (13th-17th) make you want to attend the second half of the fair. July), the international water sports exhibition Interboot (17th–25th September), the television broadcast of “Wetten, dass…?” (19.11.) as well as the second edition of the Vertical Pro (25. & 26. November). “The full program of events represents a great challenge for everyone involved. Our trade fair team was and is highly motivated – especially since the implementation of the previous events confirms that live meetings are indispensable for the respective industries, says trade fair managing director Klaus Wellmann.
Additional new events are already planned for 2023: For example, the guest event portfolio around the Poolgarden trade fairs (31. March – 2. April), Saw Expo (13-16. June) and play (2nd–4. June) extended.
“Despite the cautious optimism and all our efforts, we continue to be in the midst of a pandemic in which there was a complete ban on events until March this year. As a result, there is a loss of sales in the current financial year 2022. This is also due to the fact that, for example, the Fakuma does not take place due to rotation and the fainamic deal set the course for the future very positively, but distributions can only flow from 2023, explains Klaus Wellmann. “A financial support from the city of Friedrichshafen will not be necessary thanks to the liquidity improvement created last year in 2022. I look confidently at the recovery of the event industry and am convinced that Messe Friedrichshafen is well prepared in challenging times with high flexibility and an extensive portfolio.”
