【DE】INTERMOT 2022: Five questions for Alexander Wolff, Director of INTERMOT

In two months, it will finally be “Hallen auf” again for INTERMOT, the International Motorcycle and Scooter Fair, in Cologne. From 4th to 9th October 2022, the latest motorcycles, e-bikes, scooters, e-scooters as well as the most important innovations in the fields of electromobility, accessories, clothing, parts, heritage, customizing, travel and workshop equipment will be presented at the Koelnmesse site. For Alexander Wolff, director responsible at Koelnmesse for over nine months, and his team are now running the “hot phase” in which all measures taken will be finalized.

Five questions for Alexander Wolff, Director INTERMOT at Koelnmesse, about the current state of preparation.

Question: INTERMOT 2020 had to suspend. Now, after four years, it will be launched again in October. How did you use the time and what can we expect?

Alexander Wolff: That’s true, since 2018 we have not been able to hold a motorcycle fair in Cologne due to Corona. All the more we are looking forward to October 2022, we are really “hot” to the event. INTERMOT 2022 will be the first major motorcycle fair this year where motorcycle fans can experience the novelties presented over the summer live and in color. And yes, we used the time intensively, put everything to the test and also took into account the changes that have developed in the two corona years. As a trade fair organizer and industry expert, it is also an obligation for us to map an internationally leading industry platform with the entire industry/industry in one of the most sales motorcycle markets in the world. Accordingly, we have developed a future-oriented concept that will sustainably underline the importance of INTERMOT as an international business and event fair for the motorized two-wheeler world. Under the overarching guiding theme “WORLD OF INTERMOT”, the most important core ideas “Innovation”, “Community” and “Lifestyle” are filled with life and depicted in six “worlds”: WORLD OF eNNOVATION, WORLD OF 125cc, WORLD OF SHOP@INTERMOT, WORLD OF PARCOURS, WORLD OF TOURING and last but not least WORLD OF HERITAGE AND CUSTOM. All important currents and trends are recorded and presented here.

Question: The industry, especially the vehicle manufacturers, have digitally played their products into the community over the last two years – and this very successfully. How do you convince them of the marketing tool “Trade Fair”?

Alexander Wolff: That’s true, the last two years have accelerated the process of manufacturers increasingly breaking new ground and presenting their innovations digitally. This will certainly continue to be the case in the future. But an emotionally charged product such as seeing motorcycles digitally on the computer or experiencing them “live” at a trade fair cannot be compared. INTERMOT will be the fair at which these innovations will not only be seen one-dimensionally on the screen for the first time, but will also be physically tangible for motorcycle fans. And this is exactly where the added value of a trade fair lies: the direct, personal contact with the community and potential new customers – embedded in an experience event.

Question: Nevertheless: A purely face-to-face fair seems outdated, digital features indispensable. Have you adapted to these changes and requirements?

Alexander Wolff: Digital features are certainly indispensable nowadays, I agree. But is it resilient to prove that digital presentations are really the measure of all things? In times when physical events cannot take place, this is undoubtedly the right answer, but does this also apply afterwards? I think the truth is in the middle as always and a mix of face-to-face trade fair and digital assets meets both requirements.

To return to the real question – yes, here too we are well positioned. All presentations on the official press day are streamed “live” and can therefore be seen worldwide. In addition, additional video contributions will be produced and played out of all the novelties presented during the press day and the first day of the fair. In this way, we also reach motorcycle fans who cannot come physically, which is also in our or the interest of the exhibitors.

An essential goal of the trade fair participation of our customers is to establish international networks and contacts. We will support these goals digitally. Exhibitors and visitors to INTERMOT can use the INTERMOT app for this purpose. Contact persons can be specifically searched for, contacted and appointments can be made directly.

Question: You addressed the Erlebniswelt Messe. Visitors who come to INTERMOT would like to see the novelties and be additionally entertained. What can we look forward to in addition to the exhibitor presentations?

Alexander Wolff: INTERMOT will once again be a strong experience fair. As part of the WORLD OF PARCOURS, visitors get moving and experience the fascination of motorcycles live. A first ride on a 125cc machine for newcomers with and without a driver’s license, a round on a big bike or a tour with an e-bike or e-scooter to feel e-mobility up close – there is something for everyone here. And our exhibitors also know and recognize that trade fairs such as INTERMOT are developing from a pure trade fair to experience events that release a great emotionality among visitors. Touching, feeling, test sitting, test drive – only a face-to-face trade fair does this.

With the “WORLD OF SHOP@INTERMOT” we offer visitors added value. Fans can already equip themselves with new equipment for the coming season at the fair. And as part of the WORLD OF TOURING, you can not only test bikes, but also find out about experience reports of exciting tours, pick up tips for the right planning and of course look at the right accessories for the motorcycle trip on site. And if all this is not enough, then at INTERMOT 2022 you will find the topic WORLD OF HERITAGE AND CUSTOM in all halls and at many exhibitors – the stage for classic and retro bikes, bikes and accessories in the look & feel of the 70s, for spectacular designs, unique bikes and individual conversions.

Question: As of today – is INTERMOT an international industry meeting place or a national public fair?

Alexander Wolff: INTERMOT is and remains a leading international motorcycle fair for the industry and at the same time an audience fair to which motorcycle fans from Central and Western Europe make a pilgrimage. A look at the last INTERMOT illustrates this statement: approx. 50,000 trade visitors from almost 100 countries and a total of approx. 220,000 motorcycle fans came to Cologne. This is and remains our benchmark, which we will build on, even if the conditions this year are of course different from four years ago. But again: the mixture of business and public events only works as an internationally oriented platform – for our exhibiting companies, for the trade audience, for the motorcycle community and last but not least for us. Only on an international platform can companies present themselves directly and not through trade, and only here can trade visitors meet the relevant contact persons who they have to meet for a business exchange. And only here do fans see the novelties comprehensively and from all segments.
