The Leipziger Messe group of companies is optimistic about the future again in the third year of the corona pandemic. “We expect sales of over 60 million euros in 2022,” says Martin Buhl-Wagner, Managing Director of Leipziger Messe. Managing Director Markus Geisenberger adds: “Currently, 168 events are planned by the end of the year. Three quarters of all planned events will take place with it.”

The support for trade fairs, congresses and events at the Leipzig Trade Fair, the Congress Center Leipzig (CCL) and the CONGRESS HALL at Leipzig Zoo is unbroken. This is also confirmed by exhibitors and visitors in all surveys. Among other things, the CADEAUX / MIDORA trade fair family (3rd to 5th September), the therapy DÜSSELDORF (16th to 17th September), the model hobby game (30. September to 2. October), the protekt (2nd to 3rd November), the monument and MUTEC (24th to 26th November), at the congresses, among others, the German Foundation Day (28th to 30th September) or BIO-Europe (24th to 26th October).

The business development of 2022 thus shows a significant upward movement compared to the pandemic year 2021. This left significant cuts in the balance sheet. At that time, only 113 of the planned 270 events could be held. The group of companies achieved sales of 28.4 million euros. The result could be stabilized through compensation payments from the shareholders, the extraordinary economic aid of the federal government as well as consistent cost management and the use of short-time work.

The group of companies has made every effort to fully maintain the ability to act and competitiveness as well as its provision of services. No workplace has been actively dismantled. In July of this year, a house tariff was concluded for a stable and motivating working environment.

The efforts were rewarded: In 2021, the Leipziger Messe became service champion in a nationwide industry comparison for the eighth time in a row.

New business consistently promoted

“Enails arise in economic upheaval situations. We have used the pandemic period to consistently advance our new business and to expand and reorganize our event portfolio through our own developments and acquisitions,” says Markus Geisenberger.

Therefore, two self-developed events celebrate their premiere in the 2022 trade fair calendar: Zahntechnik plus started very successfully in March. The therapie MÜNCHEN completes on the 28th to the 30th. November in the south the existing therapy fairs in Leipzig, Hamburg and Düsseldorf. In 2023, the new gaming event CAGGTUS Leipzig (14th to 16th April 2023) and the networks:ON (12th to 14th September 2023), the trade fair for energy technology, distribution and broadband networks.

Two leading international industrial trade fairs have been acquired. In 2023, GrindTec, the central international trade fair for tool processing and tool grinding, moves from Augsburg to Leipzig. It will take place from the 7th to the 10th. March 2023 at the same time as the trade fair double Intec and Z and expands it with a relevant industrial segment. PaintExpo, the world’s leading trade fair for industrial painting technology, was acquired. She opened its doors for the first time in Karlsruhe in April 2022 under the direction of the Leipzig Trade Fair – with great success with exhibitors and visitors.

Successful acquisition at congresses and guest events

The World Transport Forum, the Annual Summit of the International Transport Forum (ITF), has now extended its presence in Leipzig until 2027. For the sixth time, the Congress Center Leipzig (CCL) of the Leipziger Messe Unternehmensgruppe, with the support of the state of Saxony and the city of Leipzig, was able to prevail in the tender. The Leipziger Messe thus convinces as a partner and location for upcoming event highlights. The calendars of CCL and the CONGRESS HALL at Leipzig Zoo are densely filled. The Velo-city World Cycling Summit will be on a guest appearance from the 9th to the 12th. May 2023. 2024, the Leipzig Trade Fair will be the location of the International Broadcast Centre (Media Center) of UEFA EURO 2024.

After the pandemic-related interruption, the business of the subsidiaries is also fully starting again. At fairgourmet, the very good order situation results above all from the high utilization of the locations of Leipziger Messe. In addition to numerous orders for individual trade fair appearances, FAIRNET was also the general agency for the conception and implementation of the central celebrations for the Day of German Unity 2022 in Erfurt.

Leipziger Messe International LMI realizes federal and state participations for German exhibitors at the most important international trade fairs on almost all continents. For 2023, 25 projects worldwide have already been won.

Strategically developed digital business models

“The Leipziger Messe group of companies has many years of expertise in the implementation of trade fairs, congresses and events on site and worldwide,” explains Martin Buhl-Wagner. “For this purpose, we offer our customers all event-related services from a single source. We are consistently expanding this competitive advantage along the customer journey – especially digitally.”

The software competence was deepened, organizational processes were further digitized, the entire web environment has been redesigned in a user-friendly way. Exhibitors and visitors receive an interactive event experience using newly programmed apps.

The in-house ticketing system has been further developed into an independent business model and is distributed nationwide. The football first division Eintracht Frankfurt has been using the system for stadium occupancy since 2021. Since this year, the magic experience world “House of Magic powered by Ehrlich Brothers” in Oberhausen has also been part of the clientele.

The online hotel portal has been redesigned, with which the Leipziger Messe offers participants active help in planning their stay in Leipzig. In response to ongoing planning uncertainty, an initiative to strengthen the trade fair and conference location was also developed with the partner hotels. An additional agreement guarantees Leipziger Messe customers improved hotel conditions, shortened cancellation periods and minimization of cost risk by the end of 2023.

Climate neutrality by 2040

In 2009, Leipziger Messe was the first trade fair company to be certified with the Green Globe seal according to international standards and has since been recertified every year. Sustainability remains an integral part of the corporate strategy. From 2023, the group of companies will purchase one hundred percent green electricity for its business operations. By 2040, it strives for full climate neutrality of business activities.

Strengths of face-to-face events as a basis for the future

Despite difficult framework conditions, the Leipziger Messe therefore looks forward to further developments in 2022 and 2023. The strengths of face-to-face events, along with the expansion of digital infrastructures, have proven to be a sustainable basis for future developments.

In this way, the group of companies will continue to live up to its role as an essential economic and innovation factor for the region in the future.
