The comeback of the year has been successful: After a two-year corona break, InterTabac and InterSupply have continued their old successes. From the 15th to the 17th In September, the trade fair duo returned with an even more diverse supporting program and over 600 exhibitors – including around 160 who have never been there before in Dortmund. What’s more, with 12,100 visitors, the world’s largest trade fair for tobacco products and smoking supplies and the international trade fair for the production process for tobacco products, e-cigarettes, pipes and hookahs have once again reached a high level of visitors this year. “The very good result and the consistently positive voices from the industry show that the trade fair duo in Dortmund remains the most important meeting place of the international tobacco industry even after the forced break,” says Sabine Loos, Managing Director of Westfalenhallen Unternehmensgruppe GmbH.
The world’s largest trade fair for tobacco products and smoking supplies, InterTabac, and InterSupply, the international trade fair for the production process of tobacco products, e-cigarettes, pipes and hookahs, are open from the 15th to the 17th. September returned with full strength in nine halls of Messe Dortmund. More than 600 exhibitors from 69 countries were represented at the world’s leading trade fairs in the tobacco industry, around 160 exhibitors were there for the first time. In the Dortmund exhibition halls, some of them even presented their offer to the international or European market for the first time. Novelties such as the ‘International Cigar Pavilion’ or the even more diverse supporting program were also well received by the visitors and very well attended.
“The framework conditions were difficult. The global political situation, stalled supply chains, the corona pandemic and problems with issuing visas presented participants and us as organizers with enormous challenges. Especially against this background, we are extremely satisfied with the fact that we were able to successfully build on 2019,” reports Sabine Loos and refers to the high level of exhibitor satisfaction. More than 92 percent of InterTabac exhibitors have already spoken out in favor of participation again. This value has risen again this year compared to 2019. InterSupply also recorded a significant increase in satisfaction. Almost 90 percent of exhibitors are already planning to participate next year. This is another seven percent more than in the last edition.
Many international visitors at the fairs
Once again this year, the who-is-who of the international tobacco industry was a guest in Dortmund, including well-known representatives from retail, wholesale and industry. 12,100 national and international trade visitors came from the most important core target groups and economic sectors, such as the classic tobacco products retail trade or the gas station and kiosk business. Numerous visitors came from abroad to visit InterTabac and InterSupply: Almost 50 percent of visitors were international this year, including a high presence from the USA and Canada. From the Asian region, the trade fair duo recorded a high number of visitors, especially from China, India, Indonesia and Japan. South and Central America was strongly represented with countries such as Chile, Brazil, Argentina or Mexico, among others.
InterTabac and InterSupply once again recorded a high volume of European visitors from Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands, Italy, France and Turkey. The popularity from Germany was also great: Around 50 percent of visitors came from here. After the ‘Corona break’, there was a high interest in informing yourself on site at InterTabac and InterSupply about new topics and trends and finally maintaining personal exchange within the industry again. Also this year, many visitors came back from the classic retail trade and took the opportunity to exchange ideas with their colleagues and gain inspiration for their own assortment composition,” says trade fair director Sabine Loos.
International superstars on InterTabac: Mike Tyson, Ralf Moeller and Dan Bilzerian
This year, several international superstars from the USA and Germany enriched the comeback of the year: Former boxing world champion Mike Tyson visited InterTabac at the booth of the exhibitor “Futurola” with his own collection. As another star guest, the German Hollywood actor and former bodybuilder Ralf Moeller was on site at the trade fair duo and was available to visitors as a special highlight for joint photos on the social media wall in the modern entrance north. Dan Bilzerian also did not miss the opportunity and visited InterTabac – on Instagram alone, the American known as a poker professional is followed by over 33.5 million people.
Thomas Schäfer, Managing Director of the Handelsverband Nordrhein-Westfalen, takes stock of the trade: “In the new edition in 2022, InterTabac remained true to its reputation as the world’s leading trade fair for the tobacco industry.” Corona and war also presented trade with unexpected challenges. This makes it all the more important for us to enter into personal exchange in these times and to work together on solutions and innovations that make us safe for the future. Nowhere else is it so easy for retailers to get in touch with international manufacturers and suppliers and at the same time get a compact overview of the offers of the entire tobacco industry.”
Strongly represented the classic segment again
International exhibitors from all relevant tobacco segments presented themselves in a total of nine halls. Also this year, the classic segment around cigar, cigarette, pipes, pipe tobacco and fine cut was again strongly represented. In halls 4 to 7, the exhibitors showed, among other things, hand-picked cigars from family-run manufactories and limited editions or new, high-quality designs for pipe lovers. In neighboring Hall 6, visitors found everything about the topic of Point of Sale. Various exhibitors with a focus on specialist retailers as well as renowned wholesalers were on site here.
Steffen Kahnt, member of the management board of the Bundesverband des Tabakwaren-Einzelhandels e.V., underlines the satisfaction of tobacco products retail trade with InterTabac 2022. (BTWE): “This year, InterTabac once again presented itself as the leading innovation, order and dialogue platform for tobacco retailers across all segments of the industry. The variety that InterTabac offers – from the classic main range to next-generation products – is incomparable in this form. In Dortmund, you don’t have to look for the trends – they are all present here. And the industry needs this presence as well as the personal exchange on site in Dortmund in order to be able to shape the future of the cultural asset tobacco together.”
Next-generation product remains in vogue
In addition to the classic segments, the trendy next-generation product (NGP for short) were once again exhibited in this trade fair edition. In the Westfalenhalle as well as Halls 1 and 2, visitors found a wide range of exhibitors around “heat-not-burn” products, vaping, e-cigarettes and e-liquids as well as potentially risk-reduced products (PRRP) and cannabidiol (CBD). As in previous years, the tasting of the various products and flavors was expressly desired again. For example, retailers were able to take home impulses for their own assortment composition – even beyond the “classic segment”. “The NGP sector shows a broad development in the industry – InterTabac and InterSupply also reflect this trend with an increasingly important range of exhibitors on the topics,” explains Sabine Loos. And that’s not all: In Hall 8 and part of Hall 6, hookah suppliers once again showed their hookahs and matching accessories at this year’s trade fair edition: “Water pipes remain in vogue. Accordingly, the offer of exhibitors in this area was also diverse again,” continues the head of the trade fair.
Everything about the processes behind tobacco products was in Hall 3, the InterSupply Hall. Messe Dortmund launched Messe Dortmund in 2015 the international trade fair for the production process of tobacco products, e-cigarettes, pipes and hookahs. At the already 6. InterSupply edition, the exhibitors showed their offer around the production of tobacco, liquids as well as their processing and packaging again this year in Dortmund.
Comprehensive supporting program appeals to visitors
For the second time, a comprehensive supporting program accompanied the trade fair duo, which depicted all current topics and challenges of the entire industry. It was developed together with leading industry experts and thus offered real added value for all professionals. “After the successful premiere at the last trade fair edition in 2019, we have significantly expanded the program once again. The offer for professional information and personal exchange was gladly accepted by our visitors, the events were constantly very well attended,” reports Sabine Loos.
In the Classic segment, for example, “Cigar & Rum Pairing” allowed to taste, smoke and taste again. Experts created completely new taste experiences for the professional audience through extraordinary compilations and offered suggestions for the consultation in retail, among other things, through the combination with spirits. In the Speed Fire Presentations on NGPs, which were created in cooperation with DTZ, some emerging newcomers from the field of next generation products present themselves. And of course, the program also shed light on the political situation of the tobacco market: For example, the European Confederation of Tobacco Retailers (C.E.D.T.) invited to an open discussion on cutting-edge topics such as nicotine couches, cannabis light, tobacco heaters and e-cigarettes.
The global corona pandemic has not only presented the tobacco industry with challenges in the last two years. But we took advantage of the break and developed a lot in terms of content: Visitors were happy to accept both new and proven offers from the trade fair duo, contacts were successfully maintained again and shops were concluded. The feedback from the industry was consistently positive. This feedback as well as the many stand bookings and ticket sales have shown us: The industry continues to stand behind InterTabac and InterSupply. I am already looking forward to the next trade fair edition in 2023,” Sabine Loos sums up this year’s edition of InterTabac and InterSupply.
Interested exhibitors and trade visitors can already note the date of InterTabac and InterSupply for the coming year. The next edition of the fairs will take place from the 14th to the 16th. September 2023 – of course again in the halls of Messe Dortmund.

Voices of associations and partners
Michael von Foerster, Managing Director of the Association of the German Smoke Tobacco Industry e.V. (VdR)
The global situation remains tense due to the war in Ukraine and the corona crisis. This made it all the more important to stick to the implementation of InterTabac 2022. This year’s fair showed again: Family-run companies with knowledge about tobacco matured over generations form the heart of the German tobacco industry. These must now be protected so that medium-sized craftsmanship will continue to be as impressive as this year at InterTabac.”
Jan Mücke, Managing Director of the Federal Association of the Tobacco Industry and Novel Products (BVTE):
“The new edition of InterTabac was a complete success: We were able to marvel at the innovative power of our industry both in the classic tobacco segment and in the next-generation products. Society and the economy are in upheaval and this year’s trade fair edition has shown that the entire tobacco industry is united with them. With new ideas, solutions and innovations, the nicotine and tobacco industry is getting fit for a sustainable future.”
Bodo Mehrlein, Managing Director of the Federal Association of the Cigar Industry (BdZ):
The reissue of InterTabac in 2022 was a great event for all represented small and medium-sized cigar and cigarillo exhibitors. The premiere of the “International Cigar Pavilion” offered the ideal atmosphere for international manufacturers, distributors and dealers to make new contacts, meet long-standing colleagues personally and do business. This is only possible at the tobacco fair in Dortmund.”
Steffen Kahnt, Member of the Management Board of the Bundesverband des Tabakwaren-Einzelhandels e.V. (BTWE):
“This year, InterTabac once again presented itself as the leading innovation, order and dialogue platform for tobacco retailers across all segments of the industry. And the industry needs this presence as well as the personal exchange on site in Dortmund in order to be able to shape the future of the cultural asset tobacco together.”
Dustin Dahlmann, Chairman of the Alliance for Tobacco-Free Enjoyment (BfTG):
The large number of e-cigarette exhibitors and the presence of vaping in various program items at InterTabac 2022 is very gratifying for us as an alliance for tobacco-free enjoyment and shows the high relevance of the topic. For the e-cigarette industry, InterTabac is still the ideal platform to make and maintain contacts.”
Oliver Pohland, Managing Director of the Association of eCigarette Retail e. V. (VdeH):
“InterTabac 2022 showed that interest in e-cigarette as a risk-reduced alternative to tobacco cigarettes is still great. Numerous national and international exhibitors from our industry, including many who were represented at InterTabac for the first time, took the opportunity to present new innovations and products for adult smokers. Important contacts were made and after a long time personal conversations were held again. An excellently organized supporting program with informative and entertaining offers has rounded off the trade fair experience.”
Thomas Schäfer, Managing Director of the North Rhine-Westphalia Trade Association:
In the new edition in 2022, InterTabac remained true to its reputation as the world’s leading trade fair for the tobacco industry. The current world market situation is tense due to corona and war. And this presents trade with unexpected challenges. This makes it all the more important for us to enter into personal exchange in these times and to work together on solutions and innovations that make us confident for the future. Nowhere else is it so easy for retailers to get in touch with international manufacturers and suppliers and at the same time get a compact overview of the offers of the entire tobacco industry. That’s why it’s nice that after the corona break, InterTabac was able to maintain the high quality standard of past trade fair editions with its wide range of trade fairs, diverse and international exhibitor area and interesting program. The visit to InterTabac will continue to be mandatory for us as a trade association in the future.”
Christoph A. Puszkar, Head of Marketing/PR, 5th Avenue Products Trading GmbH:
“InterTabac is the ideal platform for us to present ourselves and maintain contact with our customers. After two years of corona break, it is a nice experience to finally be able to meet familiar faces from the industry again. In my opinion, the fair is not only an enrichment for us as a company, but also an exciting experience for me as a trade visitor.”
Dennis Dahlmann, Chief Executive Officer, Director & Dustin Dahlmann, Chief Financial Officer, Director at InnoCigs GmbH & Co. KG:
The appeal of InterTabac is that the quality of visitors to this fair is particularly high. Since we find the ideal audience for our products here, this is the only trade fair we exhibit at. It is of great importance to us to generate new customers, but above all to maintain and intensify our existing contacts. We had the impression that the fair has increased its quality again compared to that of three years ago. We book it as a successful weekend for us.”
Basir Baqi, Sales Manager, Hertz Flavors GmbH & Co. KG:
“For us, the focus at InterTabac is on networking. We were pleased to be able to meet our contacts in person again after two years of corona break and look back positively on the past few days. The smooth organization on the part of Messe Dortmund also contributes to this.”
Rico Winkel, Marketing Manager, Dinner Lady Fam Ltd:
“Showing yourself at InterTabac is an absolute must for us as a company. Especially for New Generation Products, there are valuable opportunities here. Once again, we are enthusiastic about the serious but at the same time relaxed atmosphere that prevails at the fair. There are many opportunities to present yourself and win potential new customers in exchange. This year, we have also focused on the communication of new products. We also find inspiration for the further development of our product range through the diverse offer that we were able to experience in the three days. We are already looking forward to being part of this fair, which is unique for the tobacco industry, again next year!”
David Galliker, Managing Director, Zippo GmbH:
“InterTabac enables us to gain a comprehensive view of the current state of the industry. For us as a lighter manufacturer, this is particularly valuable, as it allows us to feel changes in the market. We are a traditional company that also offers a product that is tailored to the current trends of the time. With our sustainable, durable lighters, we were able to open up a young, dynamic target group for ourselves at InterTabac. In addition to this new clientele, the fair is also a place for us to maintain long-term contacts in the industry.”
Jörg Gerteisen, Managing Director, Hermann Hauser GmbH:
“InterTabac is unique in the fact that the whole world of the tobacco industry comes together and presents its wide range of products. For us, this means gaining inspiration and getting into conversation with exciting industry colleagues. This year’s trade fair was once again a great success from day one to find new customers, even if the sale is secondary to us. Above all, we enjoy the special flair and networking with our customer groups. As every year, the impression of the organization was convincing again and we would like to come back next year.”
Marcello Formica, Managing Director, Gizeh Rauchbedarf GmbH:
“We have been regular exhibitors at InterTabac for many years and after the pandemic-related break, the anticipation this year was particularly great. Our high expectations were even exceeded and we can report a very lively influx. Presence and sales were once again as successful as always at InterTabac. With the mixture of networking and the discovery of new products, we are always looking forward to coming to Dortmund for this special industry experience.”
Fatih Öztürk, Sales, BLACKCOCO’s GmbH:
“InterTabac is the meeting place par excellence for the industry. We have been pleased to be part of this special trade fair for several years, which is characterized by its wide-ranging international audience. This offers us the opportunity to think outside the box into other areas of the tobacco industry that we do not get in our other everyday trade fair life. As in previous years, the experience was consistently positive for us. Despite the high number of visits, the organization went smoothly and we are already looking forward to being there again next year.”
Daniel Terveen, B2B Manager, British American Tobacco GmbH
“We at British American Tobacco are happy to be here again and again. InterTabac is the only platform where you get insights into the entire industry. This is where the relevant representatives of the industry meet and the diversity of the fair shows how the market has changed and diversified in recent years. The representatives of classic tobacco meet new products and modern trends here. Of course, we look at how the market develops. We not only present ourselves here as a major manufacturer of the industry, but are also using InterTabac this year for the launch of two new products that we have never shown before.”
Mirko Lorenzi, Managing Director, Villiger Söhne GmbH:
“We have been coming to InterTabac for many years. In recent years, we have only been able to meet online, here it feels like it used to be. The entire industry meets to introduce new products, maintain old contacts and celebrate the cigar industry. This gives a new motivation boost. It is fascinating how colorful the tobacco world has become in recent years.”
Sebastian Schmitz, Managing Director, Grand River Enterprises Trade GmbH:
“InterTabac is above all a contact fair for us. It is exciting to see the appearances of the other companies on the market and make new contacts. Our presence is particularly important to us because we are changing a lot at the moment. GRE becomes GRE-Trade in Germany. With our appearance, we send a clear message to our customers that Grand River remains on the market and that we keep our brand standing.”
Beate Kunz, PR manager, Philip Morris GmbH:
“InterTabac 2022 feels like coming home. After not being able to see each other for several years, it has a special flair this year. Personal contact is extremely important and you have time to devote yourself intensively to the conversations, be it old acquaintances or new contacts. This is also reflected in the products: There is always something new and the traditional remains. The InterTabac is a special attitude to life for me and of course we will be happy to come back.”
