【IT】More than 180 live events for a one of a kind fair

On 23 September the leading fair dedicated to musical instruments starts in Cremona, with dozens of concerts, exhibitions, and conferences for music lovers, throughout the city.


Cremona, – 2022 – There is a day to go until Cremona Musica 2022, the world’s leading trade exhibition for high-end musical instruments and the only trade fair of its kind in Europe, which between 23 and 25 September will bring thousands of enthusiasts to the City of Stradivari, thanks to the synergy with local institutions, including the Municipality, the Chamber of Commerce and trade associations.


Over 300 exhibitors from 30 countries – 48% come from outside Italy – and over 100 international buyers from 28 countries (thanks to the collaboration with ICE Agenzia) are the numbers of a fair that brings the world of music to Cremona for three days.


The calendar includes over 180 events, including concerts, recitals, competitions, exhibitions, presentations and masterclasses, with special live events that will also be held in prestigious city locations. The recital of the great American organist Cameron Carpenter will be held at the Ponchielli Theater on 23 September at 9 pm, and the finals of the Pianolink Amateurs International Competition will be held on Saturday in the same theater.


At the G. Arvedi Auditorium of the Violin Museum on Saturday 24 September at 9 pm there will be a concert with the pianist Martin Garcia Garcia and the violinist Agata Szymczewska (joined by the pianist Wojciech Szymczewski). On the occasion, Aleksander Laskowski, communications director of the Warsaw Chopin Competition, will collect the Cremona Musica Award in the communication category, on behalf of the Chopin Institute.


Other events will be held outdoors in the city center, in the courtyard of Palazzo Affaitati and in the Federico II courtyard, right in front of the Piazza del Comune, further confirming the uniqueness of the event.

At Mondomusica, the historic section of the fair dedicated to stringed instruments, the cellist Christophe Coin will participate as a special guest, and on Saturday afternoon will be awarded the Cremona Musica Award in the “performance, stringed instruments” category. Among the stringed instrumentalists, the fair will also host live performances by the trio Inventio, formed by Yulia Berinskaya, Valentina Danelon and Anna Serova, by the couple of violinists Oleksandr Semchuk and Ksenia Milas (husband and wife, he Ukrainian, she Russian), by the violinist Emma Arizza (together with the pianist Stefano Marzanni) and a master class on Polish music for violin with the violinist Agata Szymczewska.


There will also be presentations of the new CD of I Musici, with Marco Fiorini and Francesco Buccarella, of the innovative MyCello, with Blanka Prokešová, and of the new CD by Luca Fanfoni “Paganini – 24 plus 1 capricci”. In addition, numerous seminars and conferences will be held to get to know the world of stringed instruments better not only from a musical, but also the historical and constructional point of view. Simon Fischer will hold a seminar on the principles of sound production in stringed instruments, organized in collaboration with Esta Italia and the Cremona Chamber of Commerce. Another seminar, organized in collaboration with the Municipality of Cremona, will be dedicated to the geographical indications of non-agricultural products of the European Union, a very interesting topic for the protection of Cremonese violin making.


Piano Experience, which hosts producers and events dedicated to the world of keyboard instruments, once again this year proposes the acclaimed format of the “piano festivals”, with the major piano brands (Fazioli, Yamaha, Bosendorfer, Steinway) that are inviting acclaimed stars and promisng young artists of the 88 keys to Cremona Fair. Among the artists who will perform in this edition we can mention: the very young Irene Accardo, in duo with Sofia Catalano (violin), Maria Argentiero, Andrea Bacchetti, Sandro Ivo Bartoli, Giusy Caruso (with a special project on music and metaverse), Ilaria Cavalleri, Han Chen, Luna Costantini, Sara Davis Buechner, Inna Faliks, Antonio Faraò, Federico Gad Crema, Martin Garcia Garcia, Daniel Goldstein, Chelsea Guo, Alessandro Marangoni, Maya Oganyan, Cesare Picco, Alvaro Siviero, Alessandro Stella, Aleksandra Swigut, Kathleen Tagg, Dan Tepfer and Marcin Wieczorek. William Grant Naboré will also present his new box set, “Art of the piano”.


Organist Cameron Carpenter will be at the fair on Friday at 12.30 for the presentation of his concert at the Ponchielli Theater, organized by the Accademia Musicale Napoletana.


In addition, the new editions of two classic events in collaboration with Yamaha Music Europe, the Pianolink International Amateurs Competition and Disklavier Composers Contest, are back. The first will be held in the setting of the Ponchielli Theater in Cremona on 24 September, throughout the day, with an international jury composed of Olga Kern (U.S.A.), president, Vovka Ashkenazy (Russia), Anna Kravtchenko (Ukraine), Enrica Ciccarelli (Italy ) and Jed Distler (U.S.A.). The final of the second contest will be held in the Sala Stradivari (inside CremonaFiere) on the afternoon of the 25th, with the international jury composed of Antonio Faraò (Italy), Andrea Portera (Italy), Gabriel Prokofiev (Russia), Gabrio Taglietti (Italy), Dan Tepfer (France-USA).


Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov will speak to receive the Cremona Musica Award in the composition category, and his music will be performed live, in his presence, in three different contexts within Cremona Musica, with pianists Boris Berman and Alessandro Stella (who will also present their respective recordings dedicated to the Ukrainian composer), the Russian-Armenian pianist Maya Oganyan, the cellists Giovanni Gnocchi and Dylan Baraldi and the violinist Nurit Stark.


Cremona Winds will be devoted to education and practice. The fair hall dedicated to wind instruments has in fact organized two appointments with the masterclasses of saxophonist Chris Collins and clarinetist Milan Řeřicha. On Saturday 24 September, David Krakauer will be awarded the Cremona Musica Award, and will also hold a seminar on the Klezmer clarinet on the occasion.


The great classic events of the Acoustic Guitar Village have been confirmed, which will be held as usual on the live stages of the fair. On Friday 23 September there will be the competitions Corde & Voci d’Autore, dedicated to guitarists-songwriters, and New Sounds of Acoustic Music, for fingerstyle guitarists and acoustic bands. Saturday is the day of the 9th edition of the Italian Bluegrass Meeting, with dozens of artists on stage and the special participation of the great American mandolinist Mike Marshall. On Sunday morning the spotlight is on the Charango, with an event dedicated to this stringed instrument of South American origin, while in the afternoon there will be a review of guitar songwriters Corde & Voci d’Autore, with Meccanismo Armonici, Steve Saluto, Chiara Ragnini, Andrea Tarquini, Antonio Lombardi Trio, Acoustic Cage.


Special guest of this edition will be John Monteleone, legend of guitar lutherie, who will hold a lutherie masterclass and, on Friday 23 September evening at the Violin Museum, will be awarded with the Cremona Musica Award in the category of guitar making, in an event that will also see the screening of the film dedicated to him, “The Chisels are Calling” and a performance on mandolin and mandocello by Carlo Aonzo and Mike Marshall.


This year the guitars will once again be accompanied by a vast program dedicated to the mandolin, coordinated by the musician Carlo Aonzo, with masterclasses and plenty of live music on the stages of the Acoustic Guitar Village, and the arrival of numerous mandolin ensembles from all over Italy.


Saturday 24 September the Federico II Courtyard, in front of the town square, will host Cremona Musica Downtown, an evening of live music with the duo Luca Zanetti-Paola Torsi, Ukulollo & Paul Moore, Micki Piperno, Charango Session with Monique Mizrahi, Vicente Atal, Fabián Durán, Achille Zon, Carlo Aonzo & Mike Marshall, and Andrea Tarquini.


Sunday’s schedule expands with Cremona Musica Downtown Giovani, a flash mob of emerging soloists and bands will animate the courtyard of Palazzo Affaitati, in the city center.


The Accordion Show will host many events dedicated to the accordion and its tradition, with historical exhibitions of instruments from the Mauro Manicardi Collection and from the Stradella museum dedicated to Mariano Dallapè, 150 years after the construction of his first instrument. The showcases organized by the major brands that will exhibit at this year’s fair will also ensure an uninterrupted live music program during the three days of the fair. This year the coordinator of the events dedicated to the accordion, Luca Zanetti, will also hold talks dedicated to a better historical and musical understanding of the instrument.


The Media Lounge will host numerous book presentations throughout the three days, with among others John Axelrod, Boris Berman, Luca Ciammarughi, Massimo Fargnoli, Roberto Messina, Maurizio Mineo, Alice Mado Proverbio. It will also be the venue of three round tables dedicated to the new perspectives of musical dissemination, production of live events, and teaching, with representatives of important Italian and international institutions including music media, festivals and theaters, and conservatories, who will discuss these issues in public.
