It’s that time again, the next jazzahead! is in the starting blocks: The registration of the now 17. Edition of the largest international jazz industry meeting starts in a week, on the 27th. September this year. The jazzahead! will take place as a trade fair and festival from the 27th to the 30th. April in Bremen. It starts on Thursday morning and ends at noon on Sunday. Partner country this year: Germany.
MESSE BREMEN is planning jazzahead! 2023 again as a face-to-face event, but according to the current status, it also offers hybrid program content again – as well as the possibility of pure online participation. Registration for participation on site is from the 27th. September possible. The date is also considered the starting signal for the showcase application process; here, however, the application deadline is limited to four weeks and ends accordingly on the 27th. October. Registration for pure online participation begins on the 1st. November. Registrations can be made as usual on our homepage jazzahead.de.
The selection of showcase acts for jazzahead! 2023 will be carried out by three highly staffed international juries. Peter Schulze, together with Ulrich Beckerhoff the artistic director of jazzahead!: “We would like applications from the entire breadth of the scene and expressly invite musicians from the African-diasporic, indie or electro scene to apply.” Schulze continued that a lot of interesting things would take place, especially at the creative edges.
By choosing Germany as a partner country of jazzahead! In 2023, the German jazz scene will become even more important than before. This decision also leads to changes in the process: The well-known program tracks such as the European Jazz Meeting, the Overseas Night or the Partnerlandnacht will be cancelled. Instead, the musical program of this time 36 showcase concerts will be distributed over every four days.
Highlights include four major premieres that will be available – as part of the concept with the partner country Germany and in the form of completely new jazz formations with band leaders from Germany and musicians from the Netherlands, France, Austria and the USA.
The German Jazz Award has a new date: It will already be held next year on the opening day, the 27th. April, awarded at the Metropol Theater. Once again, there will be a variety of exciting acts. Realized by the Initiative Musik, the international prize has been awarded annually since 2021 with the aim of putting the diversity and creativity of the German and international jazz scene in the spotlight and honoring the winners with 10,000 euros in prize money each.
