【DE】electronica 2022 impressively confirms its status as the world’s leading trade fair for electronics

  • 2,144 exhibitors showed the entire range of electronics
  • High internationality among the approximately 70,000 visitors
  • New maximum values for exhibitor and visitor satisfaction

Excellent atmosphere in 14 halls and intensive discussions at full exhibition stands: At electronica 2022, from the 15th to the 18th November the international electronics industry live again in Munich. 2,144 exhibitors, 64 percent of them from abroad, presented their innovations for the entire spectrum of electronics to the world’s leading trade fair to around 70,000 visitors. SEMICON Europe took place in parallel in almost one and a half halls. A content-rich supporting program with conferences, forums and special events such as the CEO Roundtable took up the focus topics of the fair and offered space to discuss current challenges such as the energy transition, supply chain bottlenecks, shortage of raw materials and shortage of skilled workers.

“electronica 2022 impressively confirmed its status as the world’s leading trade fair and in turn showed that Munich is THE trade fair location for the international electronics industry,” sums up Dr. Reinhard Pfeiffer, Managing Director of Messe München. “We are very pleased that we are only about 14 percent below the record result of 2018 among visitors and that the proportion of international visitors is even higher at around 54 percent than at the previous events – an outstanding result in these times. In addition, according to the trade fair survey, our exhibitors and visitors have never been as satisfied with electronica as they were this year.”

electronica has once again demonstrated its importance as the leading global trade fair and conference platform for the electronics industry this year, according to Dr. Gunther Kegel, President of the Association of the Electrical and Digital Industry (ZVEI): “The mood is positive – after four years finally live again in Munich, the stands in the exhibition halls were well attended, many discussions were held and valuable contacts were made. This shows once again: The personal meeting and the direct exchange at trade fairs cannot be replaced.”

Exhibitors enthusiastic about trade fair appearance

“What a brilliant comeback of electronica!” says Philip Harting, Chairman of the Advisory Board of electronica and Chairman of the Board of Management of the HARTING Technology Group. “It has never been so international, so concrete in customer conversations, so targeted on the part of visitors. Messeplatz München has shown that with a coherent offer, with clear messages, international visitors will find their way to Germany. I am already looking forward to electronica 2024. Katja Stolle, project manager of electronica, confirms: “The exhibitors were extremely satisfied, both in terms of visitor quality and the results of the customer discussions, which usually took place at the highest decision-maker level. When walking through the halls, you could clearly feel that the industry was very happy about a reunion and the personal exchange.”

Top-class start: CEO roundtable

Already on the eve of the fair, 14. November, the CEO roundtable with economic figures from the semiconductor industry took place. Jean-Marc Chery (STMicroelectronics), Jochen Hanebeck (Infineon), Gregg Lowe (Wolfspeed) and Kurt Sievers (NXP Semiconductors) discussed global challenges in the industry and their visions for the future of an all-electric society. The panelists emphasized, for example, how important it is not to lose sight of the need for innovation despite supply chain problems, shortage of raw materials and shortage of skilled workers.

Framework program sheds light on future topics

The trade fair also reflected topics and challenges that currently move the electronics industry with its extensive accompanying program. One of the major focus topics was sustainability: Be it on the basis of the exhibits at the booth or as a discussion topic in the conferences and forums – at electronica, the industry manifested its importance as a pioneer of sustainable technologies. In order to counter the shortage of skilled workers, the fair organized various career initiatives such as on-site recruiting, Student Day and a job market, which brought together exhibitors and young professionals and were intended to inspire young people, especially women, for the industry. The Fast Forward platform, which offered selected start-ups a stage to present their innovations to the professional audience, was also aimed at promoting young talent.

SEMICON Europe completes the fair

Once again, exhibitors at SEMICON Europa showed solutions and products from the field of semiconductor production in parallel to electronica and thus rounded off the trade fair offer harmoniously. Laith Altimime, President of SEMI Europe, said: “At this year’s SEMICON Europe, which was strategically co-located with electronica, industry leaders offered interesting insights into microelectronics trends that are crucial for the innovation and growth of the industry in Europe and around the world. Record numbers of visitors and a sold-out exhibition area – SEMI is enthusiastic about this year’s results.”

The electronica in numbers

2,144 exhibitors arrived from 48 countries and regions (2018: 3,124 | 53), about 64 percent of them from abroad (2018: 70 percent). Around 70,000 visitors came from approx. 100 countries and regions (2018: 81,471 | 101), the foreign share was around 54 percent (2018: 50 percent). The top 10 visitor countries were after Germany (in this order): Italy, Austria, France, Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Switzerland, USA, Israel, Spain, Turkey and Sweden.

The next electronica will take place from the 12th to the 15th. November 2024 in Munich.
