【DE】Cycling and hiking trips: three days of the fair for the active holiday year

Cycling and hiking trips at the CMT 2023 in Stuttgart extended: nature experiences, sporting extravagance and high-tech under one roof

The “winners” of the past were and are all activities that were possible outdoors: cycling, hiking or playing golf experienced an enormous demand that continues. The joy of Germans in outdoor activities is unbroken. Providers of bikes, equipment as well as cycling and hiking holidays can still count on great interest. At the same time, active holidaymakers are increasingly spoilt for choice when it comes to the right bike, the right outfit for hiking and the perfect sports holiday or a short trip to mountain biking.

Visitors to the trade fair bicycle and hiking trips, which take place from the 14th to the 16th January 2023 in Stuttgart, are therefore clearly at an advantage. The fair gives an overview of which tourist trends will be en vogue in the coming year, which new high-end products are waiting for customers and which special destinations are on offer for cyclists and hiking travelers. The GPS forum also provides information on handling, route planning and routing functions of navigation systems. The trade fair visitors can look forward to a real firework of inspiration and information in Hall 9 in 10,500 square meters. And another innovation: the fair will be extended to three days for the first time, so that you can also use Monday to visit the “bicycle and hiking trips”. The opening hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Demand for holiday form cycling holiday is growing

In its annual cycling trip analysis, the General German Bicycle Club (ADFC) concludes that a total of four million people would have opted for a cycling trip in 2021, half a million more than in the previous year. “We are very pleased that cycling tourism is on the rise after the difficult travel year 2020,” says ADFC Tourism Board Member Christian Tänzler. Cycling is popular, especially where the quality of the cycle paths is right. Infrastructure plays a central role in deciding on a cycling trip or a day trip.” According to the analysis, almost 70 percent pay close attention to the road safety of a route and estimate separate cycle paths and little car traffic. In addition, the structural condition of the paths plays an important role for 66 percent of cyclists.

In contrast to day trips, the tourist attractiveness is of great importance for longer cycling trips: 71 percent of respondents say that they pay attention to sights along the route when planning their travel. 61 percent also want bicycle-friendly accommodation on their route. When asked about the reasons for a cycling trip, 80 percent of the participants say that they want to hear a lot about the country and its people when cycling trips. 67 percent want to be active on vacation, 52 percent like to travel in an environmentally friendly way and for 48 percent it is important to promote their own health. Overall, the experiences of a cycling trip are positive with a clear majority: 68 percent of respondents say that they are planning a trip on two wheels again next year.

More and more people in the wheel saddle

According to cycling travel analysis, more and more people are cycling in their free time. 42 million citizens took at least one day trip by bicycle in 2021. This is eleven million more than in the previous year. In addition, 24 percent of the cycling population bought a new bicycle last year, with almost half of the new purchases being electric bicycles. The selection of bicycle types is huge: Whether city bike, touring bike, road bike, mountain bike, gravel bike, single speed or recumbent bike – all bike models are now available with or without electrical support. Handy and light bicycle models as well as high-tech folding bikes are also a highly sought-after segment.

According to research by the Zweirad-Industrieverband (ZIV), the market development of German bicycle and e-bike manufacturers is impressive despite difficult conditions. After the record year 2020, 2021 should also be regarded as a success. The number of pedelecs sold has risen from 1.95 to 2 million and now corresponds to a market share of 43 percent. At the same time, the number of bicycles sold fell from 3.09 to 2.7 million pieces, so that the number of units sold fell from 5.04 million to 4.7 million. However, it is thus well above the pre-corona level.

Forum for outdoor enthusiasts

The trade fair “Bicycle and Hiking Travel” confirms this trend and has been an important forum for cycling fans in southern Germany for many years. “A great advantage, for example, is that all exhibited bicycles can be tried out on site,” says Alexander Ege, Director of Fairs & Events and responsible for the holiday fairs of Messe Stuttgart. A 1600 square meter bicycle course encourages curious and those who want to buy alike to do a few trial laps at once. In addition, you can be informed extensively about the right hiking boots or suitable backpacks at Ralf Stefan Beppler’s outdoor advice stand. The specialist dealer, advertising manager and specialist journalist is a real outdoor veteran and has been working in the industry for more than 30 years. In the Hiking Theme Park, you will also get up-to-date information about the respective trends and currents in this holiday segment.

Top exhibitors at the start

Hall 9 will be fully booked, after all, around 170 exhibitors from twelve countries will be presented there, including a large joint stand from France and for the first time Poland. The association “Tasuleasa Social” from Romania is also new, which combines help for children and young people with sustainability and environmental awareness with its social projects. In an educational forest adventure park that Tasuleasa Social created in 2010, by the way, the only one in Romania, children learn to appreciate and protect nature. In addition, “perfect hiking or cycling tours, professional equipment, technical highlights and an innovative atmosphere are guaranteed,” announces Rebekka Körner, project manager of the fair. “We have top exhibitors with us, including Bosch ebike systems, Paul Lange or Cube, but also some new dealers from the e-bike sector.”

Hiking holidays still very popular

The hiking holiday is in fourth place among Germans among the most popular types of holiday and around eleven percent of Germans stated in a survey by the IfD Allensbach that they often go hiking in their free time. In 2021, around 1.45 million people in the German-speaking population aged 14 and over stated that they even hiked several times a week. So if you like to lace up your hiking boots, you can make use of an impressive regional variety: from local low mountain and mountain regions to exclusive hiking trips throughout Europe. Whether by bike or by pedes, whether in the mountains, in the forest or by the sea, whether in Germany or beyond – if you like to spend your holiday or leisure time actively, you should not miss the trade fair for cycling and hiking trips.

A highlight from the extensive supporting program is certainly the live report “Running, eating, sleeping” by and with Christine Thürmer on Sunday, 15. January in Hall 9. She reports how she hiked a total of 4277 kilometers on the Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada – actually unsportsmanlike and without experience. Later, the long-distance hiker conquered the Continental Divide Trail and the Appalachian Trail. The ProCycle Outdoor Treff, a specialist event for bicycle and hiking specialists, is about signage and possible promotion for cycling and hiking trails networks, and the Natursport Akademie from the Zugspitzdorf Grainau will present itself for the first time at the fair with various events.
