【DE】jazzahead!: Building Bridges in New York

jazzahead! delegation is in New York in January – four commissioned works as part of the partner country Germany

jazzahead! in New York: A delegation from Bremen will travel to the US metropolis in January to present the jazzahead! and to present the partner country Germany. And that’s not all: Ingrid Laubrock will give an exclusive pre-concert with her newly formed ensemble “Lilith” in the famous Blue Note Club on January 14th. In addition, two days earlier, a panel on jazz in Germany will take place at the Goethe-Institut, which will include Laubrock with Charlotte Greve, Timo Vollbrecht and Tobias Meinhart, as well as other German musicians who are closely networked in the USA and who live and work there.

“We want to strengthen the artistic exchange”

The saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock is one of the four artistic directors of the so-called “Commissioned Works”, which are part of the artistic concept of the partner country program. The partner country Germany, which is the focus this year, cooperates in musical form with four other countries – with the neighboring countries Austria, France and the Netherlands as well as the USA. Project manager Sybille Kornitschky says about the “Commissioned Works”: “Behind our planning is the artistic exchange that we want to shed new light on and strengthen.” For jazzahead! Peter Schulze and Götz Bühler will travel to the USA.

The four “Commissioned Works” in detail: In Austria the saxophonist Heinrich von Kalnein is the bandleader, in the Netherlands the drummer Felix Schlarmann and in France Daniel Erdmann is another saxophonist. Kornitschky: “We selected the musical directors together with our cooperation partners, but they themselves had complete freedom in putting together their ensembles, which of course – and we are working on this together with the partner organizations – via jazzahead! should endure beyond that.”

Ingrid Laubrock about the project

Ingrid Laubrock is very happy to be part of this project. About her band Lilith she says: “When a project initially only exists in the imagination of the composer, it is a somewhat daunting task to find a name and write about it. As I pondered a potential band name, it struck me how rare it is to have an Adam and Eve in the same group. This reminded me of Lilith: Adam’s first wife, who, unlike Eve, was formed at the same time and from the same clay as Adam. Many myths surround Lilith, but they all have one thing in common: she is not submissive, but powerful and feared. At a time when women’s rights are at risk of being abolished, reversed, or simply non-existent, it seems appropriate to celebrate a dangerous and uncomfortable woman.”
