The Leipziger Messe thus continues to fulfill its performance promise and is and remains the economic engine of the region, says Martin Buhl-Wagner, Managing Director of Leipziger Messe. Managing Director Markus Geisenberger adds: “People want to meet again. Our trade fairs, congresses, events are in demand. In 2022, we held a total of 191 events with over 7,800 exhibitors and 443,000 visitors as well as a variety of national and international customer projects. For the ninth time in a row, we were named service champion of the German trade fair industry by our customers, which emphasizes our performance as a group of companies.”


The comparison illustrates the positive trend: In the pandemic year 2021, sales amounted to 28.4 million euros, at that time only 113 events with limited numbers of participants could take place.


Particularly gratifying: Both exhibitors and visitors reported exceeded expectations in 2022 – all surveys signal a high willingness to come back or recommend. The popularity for trade fairs, congresses and events at the Leipziger Messe, the Congress Center Leipzig (CCL) and in the KONGRESSHALLE at Leipzig Zoo is thus unbroken.


Profiled trade fairs well attended again, new business strikes


In particular, events that were already profiled in the pre-pandemic period were well received again in 2022. Trade fairs such as PARTNER PFERD, the world’s leading trade fair OTWorld, CosmeticBusiness in Munich, protekt, GGS – trade fair Dangerous Goods / Hazardous Substances or denkmal and MUTEC met with great interest in exhibitors and participants. For example, the public fair modell-hobby-spiel recorded a higher per capita purchasing behavior with 67,100 visitors.


Newly developed or recently adopted events showed a very good start. Zahntechnik plus celebrated its successful premiere in March 2022 with over 50 exhibitors. therapie MÜNCHEN with 3,200 trade visitors supplemented the existing therapy fairs in Leipzig, Hamburg and Düsseldorf for the first time in the south in November. Well-filled calendars in the area of congresses and guest events


With a densely filled calendar of events, the congress and guest event business benefited from many pandemic catch-up dates and postponements. For example, the KONGRESSHALLE at Leipzig Zoo achieved a record result since its commissioning. In the CCL, the congress business has once again reached the occupancy level of 2019.


With great visitor interest, traditional guest fairs and events returned to the Leipzig Trade Fair, including the agricultural fair agra and the Touristik & Caravaning.


Despite the difficult market environment abroad, Leipziger Messe International (LMI) successfully implemented 25 joint investments in 2022. In Vietnam, a cooperation agreement was recently signed with ADPEX, the organizer of the Pharmed & Healthcare Vietnam trade fair. In addition, the state of Baden-Württemberg was won over as a new client for international joint participations.


The large density of events in 2022 also ensured well-filled order books for the service subsidiaries. The modern office location MAXiCOM in the north of Leipzig achieved a full utilization of the building in 2022.


Continued investment in the digitization of the customer experience


Against the background of rising customer expectations of digital services, Leipziger Messe used the year 2022 to further advance the digitization of its organizational processes and services along the customer experience. The self-developed ticketing system is now used, among other things, at the football first division Eintracht Frankfurt and in the “House of Magic” venue in Oberhausen. With its redesigned online hotel portal, Leipziger Messe actively supports participants in planning their stay in Leipzig. By the end of 2023, more than 30 partner hotels in Leipzig will grant improved hotel conditions and shortened cancellation periods.


Consistent sustainability management


The Leipzig Trade Fair is a relevant institution for the sustainable development and crisis resilience of the region. Since 2009, it has been carrying the international Green Globe seal for sustainable action and was thus the first sustainably certified trade fair location in Germany.


In accordance with the objectives of the city of Leipzig, business activities will be carbon neutral by 2040 at the latest. In a first step, the house will purchase 100 percent green electricity from 2023. In addition, the construction of a photovoltaic rooftop system is planned next year, which covers more than ten percent of the electricity demand of the exhibition center. In addition, Leipziger Messe is a member of the hydrogen network HYPOS for connection to alternative energy and storage media.


Optimistic look into the new year


For 2023, the Leipzig Trade Fair expects a progressive normalization of the event business and is optimistic about the new year.


Numerous events are planned for 2023. In the coming months, these include the PARTNER PFERD, KINGS OF XTREME, the HAUS-GARTEN-FREIZEIT, the Mitteldeutsche handwerksmesse, the MOTORRAD MESSE LEIPZIG, the CADEAUX Leipzig, the Floriga and of course the Leipzig Book Fair with the Reading Festival Leipzig and the Manga Comic-Con.


For the first time in the trade fair calendar 2023, GrindTec, the leading international trade fair for tool processing and tool grinding, which supports the successful trade fair network Intec and Z (7th to 10th March 2023). The new gaming event CAGGTUS Leipzig (14th to 16th April 2023) will continue the long tradition of gaming festivals at the Leipzig Trade Fair.
