【DE】Specialist congress “CannaB.” on December 6th and 7th, 2022: 163 participants discussed the legalization of cannabis at the Freiburg Exhibition Center

On December 6th and 7th, 2022, the first specialist congress on the legalization of cannabis in Germany took place in the Messe Freiburg. In the new format initiated by Freiburg Wirtschafts Touristik und Messe GmbH & Co. KG (FWTM), the key points decided by the federal government were discussed with 163 experts from business, politics and society. A total of 20 participating keynote speakers took a critical look at the current framework conditions and measures in around 20 specialist lectures and panel discussions and gave an insight into a possible form of legalization with concrete approaches for the different parties involved.

“With the realization of this format, we have created a completely new platform and thus networked people throughout Germany. The response to the registrations and the feedback from the participants show that we hit the right nerve,” says FWTM Managing Director Daniel Strowitzki. “As organizers, we will continue to follow the legalization closely and will inform you promptly about the date for the next CannaB. inform.”

This is also confirmed by Daniel Kruse, President of the European Industrial Hemp Association (EIHA): “The presentation of the key issues paper by Health Minister Lauterbach was a historic event. The European hemp industry association EIHA welcomes the legalization of cannabis in Germany, which will give the European hemp industry a further boost and help to end the decades-long stigmatization of hemp. The specialist congress CannaB. has offered this complex topic the professional and serious platform it needs and deserves.”

The presentations are spread over two congress days and are divided into four different thematic blocks. On the first day of the congress, the main topics “Legal aspects of the key issues paper” and “Best Practice South and North America // Switzerland // Thailand”, on the second day “Requirements and challenges for politics”, “Cultivation vs. import: niche topic hemp cultivation in Germany” and “Social aspects” as well as “Medical cannabis – quo vadis”.

The focus was on the intensive exchange between all those involved and participants. “The legalization of cannabis offers an opportunity for a liberal society, for more freedom rights for the 4-5 million users, for more health and youth protection, and for better prevention work in the entire drug sector. But tens of thousands of new jobs will also be created in the long term, and billions in sales and tax revenue will be generated. Legalization is therefore long overdue and should be the start of a new, rational drug policy altogether. The CannaB. offered an excellent forum where these opportunities could be intensively discussed.” said Kai-Friedrich Niermann, business and corporate lawyer.

The specialist lectures and panel discussions were supplemented by an accompanying exhibition and generous areas for networking, which provided space for discussions between the participants, the exhibitors and the speakers, the importance of which was also emphasized by Nikolai Reith, economic and social policy spokesman for the FDP in the BW state parliament emphasized: “It is good that the traffic light coalition in the federal government with the planned law regulates the controlled sale of cannabis to adults in licensed shops and gets cannabis consumption out of the illegal sleazy box. However, it is extremely important that Baden-Württemberg clearly improves the addiction counseling. This is precisely why it is important to comprehensively address and discuss legalization. For this, the CannaB. an excellent platform for which I am very grateful to the organizers. Now it just has to get through to the circles of the state government!”

A continuation of the specialist congress for the coming year is already being planned.
