Three days of international networking in an exuberant atmosphere, sales success right at the beginning of the year, trends and inspiration with new formats and promotion of innovation for optics & design – that was opti 2023 at the Munich exhibition center.

opti thrilled as an industry highlight right at the beginning of the year and tuned the eye-optical family for successful cooperation and order growth in 2023. With a visitor growth of 19.2% compared to the previous year, opti is in a spirit of optimism together with the entire optics & design industry. This year, around 15,500 visitors from 67 countries came together in Munich to take advantage of the wide range of innovative formats for knowledge, distribution and exchange in a positive atmosphere. A total of 307 exhibitors from 28 countries exhibited at opti 2023. “The opti is back and on the road to success! Behind us are three inspiring days of the fair with visitors and exhibitors from all over the world. I would like to expressly thank everyone who believed in opti with us and made success possible! Seeing the industry united again in a great atmosphere was my highlight,” says Klaus Plaschka, Managing Director of GHM Gesellschaft für Handwerksmessen mbH.
Conclusion on the fair and visitor interest
The new hall constellation created a special atmosphere. Thomas Truckenbrods (President of the Central Association of Optometrists and Optometrists) personal conclusion: “She lives. And how! For me, Opti was a successful restart of an indispensable trade fair for optics in Munich. The compact number of halls that I feel like well attended has contributed to a pleasant feeling of the fair. Despite all circumstances, the consistently positive mood gives hope for an economically successful year.”
An impression that is consistently confirmed. Karsten Möhrer, Sales Director Eyewear at Eschenbach Optik: “The per capita turnover that our sales force was able to write at opti 2023 is very satisfactory. Through our adapted stand concept, we have managed to optimally absorb the visitor frequency in Munich. This made ESCHENBACH’s appearance at opti 2023 a success!”
Overall, exhibitors draw a positive balance of visitor and order volume. “The opti 2023? Great! Awesome! The fair was outstandingly good for us. As pike contact lenses, we agreed from the beginning that we would like to be present again in January. Whether customers, industrial partners, universities or new market players – opti is the optimal and most important platform for us to maintain personal contact. We are all the more pleased that the encouragement was so phenomenal!” sums up Mario Rehnert, Head of Marketing at Hecht Kontaktlinsen GmbH.
Innovative program items
Impulse lectures followed by discussions in the SUSTAINABILITY HUB and MYOPIA HUB gave interested parties the opportunity to get to know trends, research methods and technologies as well as to discuss individual questions and challenges in the group. At exhibitor tours, organized by epitop GmbH and other exhibitors, various key topics of ophthalmic optics, for example, “Smart imaging in ophthalmic screening” were addressed. Thus, opti gave important impetus to the market. In particular, the opti-TREND “myopia management” was seen by 78% of visitors as important for their everyday professional lives, with regard to the MYOPIA HUB, more than three-quarters of respondents rated opti with top marks.
Also popular were the social media consultation hours, in which Sarah Schleicher, German optician and eyewear blogger (19,000 Instagram followers) and the French optician Anne-Sophie Lapetite (100,000 Instagram fans) from AnSoStyle asked questions and answers.
Promoting innovation and young talent
Another highlight was the presentation of the second opti BOX AWARD. The winner is LARS Brillen – Swiss Made, a start-up that scores with 3D printed frames while paying attention to timelessness and sustainability. They were selected by an international jury of experts who honor young designers for their unique products with the award, evaluating the new criteria “Innovation”, “Design”, “Functionality” and “Sustainability”. LARS glasses follow in the footsteps of eyewear designer Beate Leinz, who won the first opti BOX AWARD. The winning team of LARS Brillen: “We traveled to opti to learn: We wanted to present our collection and receive feedback on our patented hinge and our models. The fact that we received so many wonderful feedback on our collection over the three days, were able to have many interesting conversations with potential customers, talk shop with other product designers and exchange ideas about the latest technologies – and even were even allowed to travel back to Bern with the opti BOX Award in our pocket exceeds all our expectations!”
Looking forward to the opti next year
A trade fair that makes you want more: 83% of visitors are already looking forward to the next opti. For the majority of opticians, the appointment in Munich is already firmly on the calendar. The next opti will take place from the 12th to the 14th. January 2024 in Munich.

About the opti
opti is the international trade fair for optics & design, which takes place annually as an industry launch in January in Munich. It offers the professional audience the complete ophthalmological spectrum from spectacle frames to lenses, contact lenses, refraction, diagnostics, low vision to shopfitting and technical equipment. The opti order platform and the place for product premieres of international market leaders and start-ups are alike. Since 2008, the fair has been organized by GHM Gesellschaft für Handwerksmessen mbH, and it took place for the first time in 1998.
