【DE】”CMT 2023 exceeded all expectations”

Caravanning and tourism offers in combination with innovations ensure satisfied visitors

Finally again the entire caravanning and tourism portfolio under one roof, finally time again for personal discussions and advice at the stands, finally CMT again. The Stuttgart Holiday Fair has once again lived up to its status as the world’s largest public fair for tourism and leisure. “Our expectations have been far exceeded,” says Roland Bleinroth, Managing Director of Messe Stuttgart. “We were able to welcome 265,000 visitors to our premises. Our exhibitors were also very satisfied: They were not only looked at and compared, but also bought and ordered. This CMT is one of the best we have ever experienced.”

In addition to the popular subsidiary fairs bicycle and hiking trips, golf and wellness trips as well as cruise and boat trips, “there was also a lot of new this time,” Guido von Vacano, member of the management board of Messe Stuttgart, refers to the innovative power of CMT. The network meeting “Future Tourism”, the award “Sustainable Destination” by TourCert, the new award of the Corps Touristique for international understanding and the kick-off event for tourist cooperation between Baden-Württemberg and the Grand Est region show that we are dealing with and implementing future topics.” In addition, the cycling and hiking trips were extended by one day – until Monday. That was the right decision. “Even on this day, we could look forward to a well-attended Hall 9,” reports von Vacano.

CMTbusiness with around 40 events

The comprehensive program for trade visitors is another success factor. Around 40 events were offered on the CMTbusiness platform. Whether Tourism Day Baden-Württemberg, the RadRunde, the Green Caravaning symposium or the New Mobility Design Congress up to Bus Tourism Day – CMT’s special program attracted around 30,000 interested parties to Stuttgart.

Diving fans appreciate the combination of interdive and holiday offers

For the first time, the international diving fair Interdive took place as part of CMT. The organizers were enthusiastic about the great popularity. Marketing Director Monika Richter: “Divers are travel-loving multi-athletes, so CMT was exactly the right setting. They like to accept the new segment and also take advantage of the entire offer of the holiday fair.” Another highlight was the thermals in the rooms of the congress center ICS Internationales Congresscenter Stuttgart. Fans and exhibitors from the paragliding and kite industry met here.

Finally, the award of the tourism heroes Baden-Württemberg was also awarded as part of the CMT. “In 2022, we could not honor our tourism heroes with dignity due to the pandemic. Now we had the chance to welcome both the heroes of that time and this year’s heroes to the stage,” says Bleinroth. It is nice to see how many people are committed to tourism in Baden-Württemberg.

Great recommendation for CMT

The trade fair visitors reward the extensive supporting program as well as the diverse offer on the fully booked site. They give the CMT the school grade 2. No wonder that 96 percent of the visitors surveyed state that they also recommend the fair to friends and relatives. On average, visitors stay at CMT for five hours to inform themselves with the exhibitors and to take a look at the 1200 vehicles on display. Almost a quarter of visitors travel more than 100 kilometers to Stuttgart. 11 percent alone travel from Bavaria. The interest of visitors is balanced at around 60 percent for the tourist offers as well as for the products in the camping and caravanning sector (multiple answers possible).

The motorhome parking space as well as the additional parking spaces in the “Motel CMT” are also highly frequented: The fair registers the record number of 9667 overnight vehicles.

Partners are completely satisfied

The CMT partner country Mongolia evaluates its own trade fair appearance as a success. “We are very happy that we were allowed to be here as a partner country,” says Badamkhorol Samdandamba. The founder of the Mongolian Center Freiburg and cultural ambassador of Mongolia underlines the benefit for guests and hosts: “At CMT we were able to present our country and our diverse culture. Many people now want to travel Mongolia, but the Mongolians have also learned a lot about Germany through the CMT.” The great interest in the travel destination 8000 kilometers away was also expressed in concrete booking requests, as Esentsengel Sukhee, owner of the tour operator Mongolia Adventure Outfitters, reported.

The two managing directors Myriam Geiser and Xenia Jauker of the CMT partner region National Park Region Black Forest are also pleased about a successful trade fair course. The Black Forest is present at many trade fairs. Here we see that interest in our region is unbroken. We had numerous high-quality conversations. Many visitors already knew the national park region and inquired about concrete offers and activities. It was a very successful CMT for us.”

BUGA – more than just a flower show

Carina Drexler, responsible for marketing and communication at the Bundesgartenschau BUGA 2023 Mannheim, also emphasizes the high visitor quality: “We had many interested and very open-minded visitors at the stand who asked specific questions. Here we also had the opportunity to present ourselves with Mannheim musicians on the atrium stage. Overall, the response is very positive for us.” This year, BUGA is a cultural partner of CMT.

Constanze Bröhmer, Managing Director of the Landesarbeitsgemeinschaft Urlaub auf dem Bauernhof in Baden-Württemberg e.V., draws a positive balance. Combining the topic of country holidays with the presentation of regional products has been very popular with visitors. “The audience was interested, enthusiastic and hungry for travel. A varied day at the fair was gladly ended with a glass of wine, a juice spritzer from local orchards or a tasting.”

Caravanning industry: demand in all areas

CMT 2023 was a huge success for the caravanning sector, sums up Hermann Pfaff, President of the Caravanning Industry Association CIVD. “There were not only guckers here, but also real interested parties.” For the caravanning industry, CMT is also an important indicator of the start of the new season. “Our performance was very well received by the visitors, it was a successful start to the new year!” Matthias Euch, board member of the German Caravanning Trade Association, agreed: “It was fantastic how many visitors were here, we had an insane number of initial contacts. In all areas of caravanning, in all vehicle categories, in rentals and in the aftersales segment, the providers were very interested in – and were able to achieve beautiful conclusions. We also welcome the product innovations and digital solutions, which are getting better and better and make life easier for the retail business.”

CMT subsidiary fairs in high demand

The exhibitors of the subsidiary fairs Golf and Wellness Travel and Cruise and Ship Trips, who present their novelties and offers in Hall 9 from Thursday to Sunday, are extremely satisfied with the course of the fair. Otto Leibfritz, President of the Baden-Württemberg Golf Association: “We are at CMT with eleven clubs and two partners and are very satisfied with the performance. Our island-shaped stand arrangement was well received by trade fair visitors. We wanted to make golf tangible and actively involve guests through offers for young and old, which was well done. In addition, we were able to answer and inform many questions, such as the work of our Environment Committee or the ‘Lifespace Golf’ initiative. A trade fair appearance serves not least to retain members and we were also successful at CMT in this respect.” Beate Proske, project manager of the brand Biohacking, Kur- und Bäder GmbH Bad Dürrheim, can only agree with this: “With our innovative offer, we were able to present ourselves well at CMT and set new impulses for health. From the beginning of the fair to the end of the fair, the audience response was excellent. If you want to exhibit, the CMT is the very best address.”

For Yehia Semeda from Nicko Cruises, demand is increasing significantly again. We are almost at the same level as 2020. The number of calls multiplied with the start of the fair, almost everything was bookings, because our trade fair discount was attractive and was gladly noticed. Environmentally conscious customers were pleased that we are now completely dispensed with heavy oil. We are very satisfied.” Hannes Schnitzer, Managing Director Golf in South Tyrol: “We are very satisfied with the fair. We were surprised that there were already many visitors on Thursday and Friday. We have rarely distributed so many brochures. We plan to exhibit again next year.”

Cycling and hiking continue on the upswing

On the first CMT weekend, cycling and hiking trips were the focus of interest. Cycling and hiking tourism is on the road to success and is enjoying growing popularity. The exhibitors were able to convince themselves of this. They praised an expert, interested audience who specifically asked about current trends, undiscovered travel regions for hiking and cycling trips or inquiring about the right accessories and suitable clothing.

Erik Neumeyer, deputy managing director of the German Hiking Association: “At CMT, we award the quality trails ‘Wanderbares Deutschland’ – a seal of quality for particularly attractive, well-maintained and exciting hiking trails. We have been to CMT very often and also like to be here, as you meet an incredible number of people from southern Germany and many exhibitors with whom you can exchange ideas. After a two-year break, demand is enormous this year, and we feel that people have a lot of catching up to do. Everyone is pleased that the CMT is now taking place again in presence, and there is a very positive mood. I firmly assume that we will be back next year.”

Anja Knaus, PR and Media at Flyer E-Bikes: “We are once again at CMT, the topic of e-bike and travel fits well together. There are many customers who use their e-bikes to travel. We are totally happy that we can go to trade fairs again. Live communication is important to us. Especially the focus on cycling and hiking is ideal for us. In principle, we are like regular guests and will certainly be there again next year.”

CMT 2024 will take place from the 13th to the 21st. January in Stuttgart.
