【DE】Messe Wien Exhibition & Congress Center: Demand for green meetings and sustainable events is increasing

270,000 participants at a total of 59 international and national guest events, from trade fairs to congresses and corporate events to entrance examinations of the University of Vienna: A successful event year 2022 came to an end for the Messe Wien Exhibition & Congress Center. In particular, the international events have once again underlined the great importance of Vienna as a conference metropolis. And the venue also plays a major role as an economic success factor: With the events, overnight stays and induced tax revenues, Messe Wien contributes to the added value in the city.

“We are very confident about the year 2023,” says Martina Candillo, Director Congresses & Events at Messe Wien. Currently, around 40 guest events are already fixed. Including several major international congresses. Special highlights: the IAAPA Expo, the world’s largest industry trade fair for the amusement park sector with 12,000 participants, or the European Ophthalmologists Congress ESCRS with 15,000 participants, which is taking place for the third time at Messe Wien.

Sustainable events are becoming increasingly important

Sustainable action is also becoming more and more a criterion at trade fairs and congresses. The demand for green meetings, as sustainable and environmentally friendly events as possible, is steadily increasing across all industries. Against the background of climate change, more and more organizers and companies want to take responsibility and act as sustainably as possible, says Martina Candillo. As a licensee of the Austrian Ecolabel for “Green Meetings” and “Green Events”, Messe Wien provides optimal conditions for this. RX – the parent company of the Messe Wien Exhibition & Congress Center – is also co-founder of the global initiative “Net Zero Carbon Events”, whose goal is to halve greenhouse gas emissions at events by 2030 and to be CO2-neutral by 2050 at the latest.

With modern event technology into the future

High standards are set not only in terms of environmental compatibility, but also in terms of the technical possibilities at Messe Wien. The technology service provider STEINER LIVE is installing a new efficient and sustainable event technology that should not only reduce the carbon footprint, but also guarantee maximum flexibility in the future. “The next technological challenges for the event industry are just around the corner. Mixed reality, virtual or augmented reality and finally the Metaverse are becoming more and more interesting for the event experience of the future,” says Martina Candillo.
