We’re counting down! In less than 7 days the final of the NK Gardenier 2023 will start during the Groene Sector Vakbeurs in Hardenberg. In the run-up to this exciting competition, we have been talking to the finalists in recent weeks. Today it is the turn of the Aeres Velp team to tell their story. We spoke to team member Willem Mateman about this.
Three days, four teams of MBO students, creating a complete garden. With the aim of winning the title of best gardener in the Netherlands. That is scheduled for 10, 11 and 12 January 2023. One of the participating teams in the final of the NK Gardenier is the team of Aeres Velp. A short introduction to these young gardeners in training. “We are Willem Mateman and Twan Geven, both 19 years old and from the Achterhoek. Our hobbies? We want to turn our biggest hobby into our job. And that is of course creating super beautiful gardens, which we are doing now. Another great hobby is football. Twan’s is Survivalrun.”
”Last year, me and Tom Thomassen would participate in the final of the National Championships. Unfortunately Tom got corona the day before the final. Twan filled in for Tom and we became 2nd. This year we would like to participate with the aim of winning.” When asked how the team is now preparing for such a large, national final. “Just like last year, we carry out certain assignments in preparation for the final. For example, this year we are building an insect hotel that will also be placed in our final garden. We are going to win this year, because we worked together for the first time last year and then even came 2nd. This year we see a great chance that we become Dutch champions. If we win, we go to the European Championship in Poland. And there too we fight for the first prize!”
Koninklijke VHG, the trade association for green professionals in the Netherlands, annually organizes the Dutch Gardener Championship in collaboration with WorldSkills Netherlands and the AOCs.
