【FRA】The Events Industry kicks off towards net zero

– The objective is to have a pledge ready for COP26

– Goals will include 50% reduction in GHG emissions by 2030

– Initiative supported by the UNFCCC and hosted by JMIC

Paris – 2 September 2021: UFI, The Global Association of the Exhibition Industry is proud to announce the launch of a new initiative – Net Zero Carbon Events – to connect the events industry globally to the rapidly growing movement towards net zero by 2050. This initiative is hosted by the Joint Meetings Industry Council (JMIC).

In November 2021, world leaders will meet in Glasgow, Scotland at COP26 to present how their countries will achieve the 50% reduction in GHG emissions by 2030 in order to deliver on the Paris Agreement. In advance of this meeting, for profit and non-profit organizations from across all sectors are setting forth their own pathways towards this goal, and the ultimate goal of net zero by 2050.

Through this initiative, JMIC aims to link all stakeholders in the corporate, professional, academic and destination communities world-wide that have also committed to engagement in what is one of the biggest collective challenges we all face today, and to invite those that have not done so yet to join.

The Net Zero Carbon Events initiative aims to bring together a wide range of industry stakeholders to:

  • Jointly communicate our industry’s commitment to tackling climate change and driving towards net zero by 2050
  • Develop common methodologies for measuring the industry’s direct, indirect and supply chain greenhouse gas emissions
  • Construct an industry-wide roadmap towards net zero by 2050, and emissions reductions by 2030 in line with the Paris Agreement, with support and guidance on key issues
  • Foster collaboration with suppliers and customers to ensure alignment and common approaches
  • Establish common mechanisms for reporting progress and sharing best practice.

The new initiative arises from the work of an organizing task force initiated by JMIC members UFI, AIPC and ICCA joined by representatives of Emerald Expositions (US), Freeman (US), HKCEC (China), Informa (UK), Javits Center (US), MCI (Switzerland), Messe München (Germany), RX (UK) and Scottish Event Campus (UK) and it was born from a discussion with the UNFCCC secretariat — United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change secretariat — which is also supporting the initiative.

All interested parties are invited to join this journey at https://netzerocarbonevents.org. The aim is to grow this initiative that represents the events industry as a whole and provide a collaborative commitment all can act on.

James Rees, JMIC President, declares: “Events drive industries and societies. They shape conversations, foster innovation and generate business. They are key to human collaboration. This holds true for every subject – including sustainability and climate change. The events industry has a special role to play in tackling climate change. We provide the meeting places and market places to work on solutions to the climate crisis. At the same time, we have a responsibility to minimise our impact on climate change. We are inviting organisations from across the events industry – venues, organisers, exhibitors and suppliers – to join this collaborative effort to drive the events sector towards net zero. “

Anbu Varathan, UFI President, indicates: “UFI is committed to driving and supporting sustainable development among our global membership and the exhibition industry at large. This collaborative and inclusive initiative that covers the whole event industry is a new important step and we look forward to identifying the commitments required for the reduction and neutralization of event-related GHG emissions.”

【DE】Restart of the trade fairs in Brno Exhibition Center after an annual break

Restart of the trade fairs in Brno Exhibition Center after an annual break

The increase in herd immunity in the Czech Republic and in Europe is a good signal for the restart of trade fair and congress events in the Brno Exhibition Center. “Trade fairs are a part of business life. If we want to be back in business as usual, we have to learn to live with certain measures for some time,” Mr. Jiří Kuliš, CEO of Brno Trade Fairs Co., comments with the clear ambition to resume exhibition activities.

Participation in the trade shows in the “Vaccinated-Recovered-Tested” mode

“Events such as trade fairs, congresses and company events have to be planned in advance. Project planning security is needed. We see it in the growing immunity in the population. In the Czech Republic, as of today the immunity through vaccination will reach more than 60%!  This puts us in a completely different situation than we were a year ago,” explains Mr. Kuliš. Therefore, he is not afraid of further closings or postponements of events.

The basic rule is the proof of immunity of all show attendees based on the pre-condition of having been vaccinated, recovered from the Covid diseas, or tested. Only those persons can be admitted to events such as trade fairs. This corresponds to the development throughout Europe when visiting restaurants, sporting and cultural events as well as trade fairs.  Visitors and exhibitors at the exhibition center must prove immunity upon entry. The same applies to the operating staff.

BVV Trade Fairs Brno Co. has a high ratio over 80% of vaccinated employees, the non-vaccinated must be tested regularly. “The biggest organizational obstacle so far has been the limitation of number of people in the exhibition halls. With the new pre-condition, this criterion has been abolished, which has significantly changed our situation for the better,” specifies Mr. Kuliš.

Also, he admits that some of the regulations and restrictions imposed may affect the number of exhibitors and visitors attending. “There are exhibitors who want to have the fair without any restrictions, and there are exhibitors who hesitate about their participation for coronavirus-related reasons and who restrict their employees to participate. The 3 principles of proving immunity lead to a relatively safe trade fair environment. It is a reasonable compromise between these two opposite views. In no case, we want to introduce restrictions that violate the basic sense of a trade show, namely meeting people “face-to-face with a handshake.”

Further safety measures as respiratory protection in accordance with current regulations or social distancing are in place. Aisles in exhibition halls and resting areas will be increased a few meters, disinfection stands are common. Conference rooms are disinfected before and after the event. Exhibitors and visitors can buy services and tickets online to avoid any queues.

New start in autumn

A recent survey among visitors and exhibitors confirmed that 80% of the trade fair participants see live presentations and face-to-face meetings at the trade fair as important for business and irreplaceable through online formats. “If companies do not want to take part in this year’s event, it is not about the rejection of trade fairs, but it is coronavirus-related. It is about mistrust in the development of the pandemic and health concerns,” emphasizes Mr. Kuliš. “After recent discussions with the responsible authorities, we see no reason for such worries and lockdown anxiety!”

The fashion fairs STYL and KABO open the new trade fair season on August 21st. The ANIMAL TECH with the National Livestock Show will be staged in early September, followed by the World Dog Show. The professional defense and security fairs IDET, PYROS and ISET take place in early October, while they confirm great interest of exhibitors. Preparations for this year’s International Engineering Fair, which has been postponed to the beginning of November, are in full swing. The GAUDEAMUS, guest fair for higher education, and Caravaning Brno, the caravan show, as well as other hosting events are being prepared.

“Trade fairs can take place under the circumstances given, but cross-border travel has not yet been completely resolved, as well as the recognition of vaccinations between countries, there are limited flight connections, and situation in some overseas countries is difficult. For European participants EU Green Pass is a great help. Participation from non-EU countries is a concern, but we are ready to assist by any means,” adds BVV CEO Mr. Kuliš. For potential exhibitors who are geographically distant and have difficulty in travelling to Europe, the Brno Exhibition Center offers the option of hybrid exhibition booth with an online connection.

It’s worth waiting – RecyclingAKTIV & TiefbauLIVE will be back even stronger in 2022!

We look forward to returning May 5-7, 2022 with RecyclingAKTIV & TiefbauLIVE!

Actually, today we would have watched scrap shears crushing metal, marveled at the screening process of soil and stones, or had the smell of fresh asphalt in our noses. But due to the Corona pandemic, the resulting planning uncertainty and the cancellation of important key players, we unfortunately had to postpone our demo trade fair until 2022.

But cheer up – we look forward to returning with the full force of RecyclingAKTIV & TiefbauLIVE from May 5 to 7, 2022!

The trade fair restart in Karlsruhe is still scheduled for September: At the two industry trade fairs Platformers’ Days (September 13 and 14) and the commercial vehicle trade fair NUFAM (September 30 to October 3), personal exchange and experiencing machine technology on site is finally possible again. With a comprehensive safety and hygiene concept, we are well prepared for the trade fairs in real operation. All further information can be found at the Messe Karlsruhe website.

The Platformers’ Days trade fair is the industry event for mobile lifting and height access technology in the D-A-CH region and, for many industry followers, the first live trade fair after a year and a half of pandemic. At the premiere event at the Karlsruhe location, more than 100 exhibitors and well-known industry giants such as Haulotte, Genie, JLG, Liebherr, Manitou, Oil & Steel, Palfinger, Skyjack, Teupen, Ruthmann and JCB will be displaying their machine technology, including live, European and German premieres.

Also at NUFAM, more than 350 exhibitors from 14 countries will present the entire range of services offered by the commercial vehicle industry. For the seventh time, the trade fair combines current technology with mobility concepts of the future. In addition, the trade fair focuses on the latest developments in freight mobility of the future with various practice-oriented formats – from lecture series and discussion rounds to New Mobility tours.

Interest aroused? – Come by and let our demo and outdoor fairs convince you.

【DE】Safe in-person trade fairs in Frankfurt

The first in-person trade fairs have already taken place. Messe Frankfurt is ready to resume in-person events with its proven safety and hygiene concept and requirement that everyone be vaccinated, recovered or tested. The first events have already been held successfully, and the next in-person events will be opening their doors in Frankfurt in September.

Messe Frankfurt’s exhibition halls and infrastructure are incomparable – and they are an important component of its safety and hygiene concept. To ensure that getting together in person at trade fairs is as safe as possible for all participants, Messe Frankfurt is implementing a variety of measures. These go far beyond those mandated in public areas, making Messe Frankfurt’s exhibition halls excellent places for business encounters even during the time of a pandemic, something that was made clear in late July, when Eurobico was held successfully and in person. These measures include 100% fresh air supplied to the exhibition halls, spacious hall and entrance designs to ensure that minimum distancing requirements can be maintained, intensive cleaning measures, a special hygiene concept for catering and food services, and the proven method of wearing face masks. To gain admission to events on the exhibition grounds, each participant must demonstrate that they are not infected with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. Everyone must present proof of vaccination, recovery or a current negative test result. In addition, the online ticketing process requires full registration that makes it possible to properly trace contacts should this be necessary.

According to Wolfgang Marzin, President and Chief Executive Officer of Messe Frankfurt: “We have made all the preparations necessary to ensure that people can take part safely, and we are ready for the return of in-person events. Although the situation remains volatile, both rising vaccination rates in Germany and worldwide and the loosening of travel restrictions are extremely promising developments. We are in close contact with our industries and will continue to provide them with the best platforms for their needs.” Digital services continue to play an important role here, and their scope can be adjusted flexibly according to the status of the pandemic.

The next events on our trade fair calendar are Automechanika Frankfurt Digital Plus and Hypermotion Frankfurt, which are taking place with an extensive online programme and in-person exhibitions on site in Frankfurt in September. Events planned for later on in 2021 include IndoorAir, Formnext and an array of guest events, such as the Frankfurt Book Fair, the Discovery Art Fair and Health & Food Ingredients.

A recent survey of 59,000 companies conducted by Messe Frankfurt highlights just how badly in-person encounters at trade fairs have been missed. The result: 97 percent of companies surveyed want to resume exhibiting on site at trade fairs. In fact, two-thirds of respondents would like trade fairs to take place entirely in person.

【DE】No infa in 2021 Hannover

The infa, one of the largest and most successful adventure fairs in Germany, will not take place this year due to the ongoing corona pandemic. Despite the currently limited infection rate, numerous exhibitors questioned their participation for the autumn, according to infa boss Carola Schwennsen from Deutsche Messe AG in Hanover. Schwennsen: “We cannot currently guarantee the exhibitors and visitors that we will be able to hold infa in the usual size and variety in October. This planning uncertainty has led many to skip this year. ”

In addition, the exhibiting companies would already have to order goods for the nine-day trade fair, recruit stand personnel and commission trade fair stands. However, since most of them had a financially difficult year behind them, the risk of an infa with fewer visitors than usual was too high for them, according to Schwennsen.

The organizers are now counting on infa 2022. They want to use the break in order to be able to “get off to a full start” in the coming year together with exhibitors, partners and artists. Schwennsen: “We have already received the signal from almost everyone that they will be back in 2022. That is why we are optimistic and energetic about the next year instead of doing things by halves now. “

【DE】FACHDENTAL Südwest only again in autumn 2022

FACHDENTAL Südwest on October 15 to 16, 2021 will be suspended / Dates for FACHDENTAL trade fairs in 2022 have already been set

FACHDENTAL Südwest, originally planned for October 15 to 16, 2021, will be suspended this year. This decision was made by Messe Stuttgart against the background of the continuing reluctance on the part of exhibitors. “Unfortunately, even in this Corona-shaped year, we are not able to achieve a sufficient basis for the successful implementation of the regional dental fair in Stuttgart,” says Andreas Wiesinger, member of the management of Messe Stuttgart. The postponement of the leading trade fair IDS Cologne from spring to autumn 2021 also put the regional dental fairs in distress. FACHDENTAL Leipzig has already been canceled due to the scheduling conflict. The FACHDENTAL Südwest trade fair date three weeks after the leading trade fair cannot be kept due to a lack of exhibitor commitments. “We very much regret this development. However, given these conditions in autumn, we cannot meet the expectations that our exhibitors, visitors and partners have of the specialist dental fair, ”continued Wiesinger.

“In autumn 2022 we hope to start again with full strength and energy with the two dental fairs in Leipzig and Stuttgart”, says Wiesinger. “For dentists, dental assistants and dental technicians from the respective regions, the specialist dental fairs are important industry meeting points for direct exchange, knowledge transfer and personal advice. A resumption of the successful format is set ”. The new dates for the FACHDENTAL trade fairs in the coming year 2022 have already been set:

FACHDENTAL Leipzig from 23 to 24 September 2022 at the Leipzig trade fair
FACHDENTAL Südwest from 14 to 15 October 2022 at the Stuttgart trade fair

About the FACHDENTAL trade fairs
FACHDENTAL Leipzig and FACHDENTAL Südwest are the most important trade fairs for dentistry in East / Central Germany and Southwest Germany. Numerous exhibitors present products and services from the field of dentistry as well as dental technology and the laboratory. The mixture of information, maintaining contacts and further training attracts dentists, dental technicians, dental professionals and students alike to the dental fairs.

In addition, universities, vocational schools and institutions traditionally present themselves at the fair and provide information about training and further education, (dual) studies, voluntary social year, federal voluntary service or internships at home and abroad. “By making the two exhibition halls ‘airier’ with at least four meters of aisle width between the stand islands, we are ensuring that the corona-related distance rules can be adhered to,” the project manager continues.
The trade fair has been announced more and more online since the beginning of the year. “In this way we support companies, educational institutions and the highly sought after specialists even more in looking for and finding each other. On our Facebook page, we present employers with their offers as well as application tips and interesting topics relating to school leaving and career entry and to prepare for the trade fair on a weekly basis. Our website at www.messe-perspektiven.de has also been supplemented with numerous suggestions relating to the event and contact options for young people, parents and teachers, ”said Theresa Buhrke.

【ZW】Zimbabwe International Fair is postponed to September

The 2021 edition of the Zimbabwe International Fair (ZITF), initially scheduled for July 20-23, has been postponed to September 21-24.

In April, the annual exhibition received approval to open after commercial operations in the industry and commerce sector were relaxed.

However, in a statement, the chairman of the ZITF board, Busisa Moyo, said the date change was due to the government’s extension of the national Level 4 blockade for the week.

He added that the delay in holding the ZITF would also give exhibitors enough time to prepare for the fair.

“The decision to postpone the fair was reached with the approval of the Government of Zimbabwe and after consulting a wide range of interested parties. With the continuous ban on intercity travel, it has been difficult for exhibitors from outside the city to effectively plan their participation and bring their news”, he explains.

The event, which is one of the largest intra-regional trade fairs in sub-Saharan Africa, was canceled in 2020 after Covid-19 infections and deaths rose.

This year’s edition is themed ‘Introducing the New Standard for Business and Industry: Realities and Opportunities’

The ZITF has already reached a total of 408 exhibitors already confirmed and at least nine countries will participate. The fair is held at the Zimbabwe International Exhibition Center in Bulawayo.
